Global Interest Rate Expectations Shift Following Recent Central Bank Decisions

Recent developments in global monetary policy have led to notable changes in interest rate expectations among major central banks. The Federal Reserve in the United States raised interest rates by 25 basis points in a unanimous decision, signaling a cautious approach to future tightening. The Fed's updated projections indicate only one more rate hike in 2026, with rates expected to remain elevated through 2027 before potential cuts in 2028. This dovish stance contrasts with market expectations, which had anticipated additional hikes in both 2026 and 2027.

In the United Kingdom, the Bank of England (BoE) maintained its Bank Rate, with a 6-3 vote reflecting a slightly dovish shift. The BoE reduced the pace of quantitative tightening more than expected and paused sales of long-dated government bonds for six months amid rising yields. The central bank cautioned that interest rates may need to increase if geopolitical tensions, particularly related to the ongoing conflict in Iran, persist.

Market expectations for rate hikes have adjusted accordingly, with the probability of a rate increase by the Fed in October rising to 57%. The situation in the Middle East remains a critical factor, as a potential de-escalation could lead to lower oil prices, alleviating inflationary pressures and influencing future rate decisions. Economic data will also play a significant role in shaping market sentiment, as even minor shifts can lead to substantial changes in rate hike expectations.
