Gold Maintains Three-Month Peak as Crude Retreats and Yields Decline
Key Takeaways
- Precious metal prices hover near three-month peak at approximately $4,660 per ounce following a 7%+ weekly surge
- Declining crude oil prices and softening US Treasury yields are alleviating inflationary pressures, bolstering gold demand
- Diplomatic discussions between Iran and Oman centered on establishing a temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz
- Markets eagerly anticipate Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole symposium address on Friday for monetary policy insights
- Wednesday’s PCE inflation report will provide fresh perspective on the state of the American economy
Precious metal valuations experienced modest weakness on Wednesday yet remained anchored near their highest level in three months, buoyed by retreating crude prices and declining Treasury yields that have diminished inflation anxieties.
Spot gold fluctuated around $4,660 per ounce, while futures contracts climbed to $4,699. Silver advanced 0.7% to reach $69.05, and platinum posted a 0.3% gain.

The yellow metal has climbed more than 7% throughout the previous week, momentum partially attributed to the US Treasury Department’s decision to accelerate repurchases of longer-maturity government securities.
This maneuver reignited what market participants describe as the “debasement strategy,” whereby investors accumulate gold as insurance against fiscal deficits and dollar deterioration. This dynamic previously powered gold’s unprecedented 2025 surge and has returned to prominence.
Crude Price Decline Eases Fed Pressure
Oil prices retreated Tuesday following negotiations between Iran and Oman regarding the establishment of a temporary joint maritime passageway potentially enabling partial resumption of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Crude valuations carry significance for gold because energy expenses directly influence inflationary dynamics. When petroleum costs decrease, inflation typically moderates, diminishing the Federal Reserve’s imperative to maintain elevated interest rates.
Elevated borrowing costs traditionally present challenges for gold since the commodity generates no yield. When rates climb, interest-bearing instruments become comparatively more appealing.
Government bond yields contracted by approximately five to seven basis points throughout the curve Tuesday, providing additional tailwinds for precious metal valuations.
Boston Federal Reserve President Susan Collins indicated her preference for maintaining current rate levels, contingent upon inflation’s continued progression toward the central bank’s 2% objective.
Market Attention Turns to Jackson Hole and PCE Release
Market participants are monitoring two critical catalysts positioned to influence gold’s immediate trajectory.
The initial event is Wednesday’s US Personal Consumption Expenditures data release. The PCE represents the Federal Reserve’s favored inflation metric and will deliver updated insight into pricing dynamics across the economy.
The second catalyst is Friday’s Jackson Hole economic symposium, where Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will present his inaugural major policy address since assuming leadership.
Warsh has encountered scrutiny for perceived ambiguity surrounding his economic perspective. Financial markets anticipate Friday’s presentation will illuminate the Federal Reserve’s stance regarding potential rate reductions.
ANZ research analysts observed that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent provided minimal fresh guidance on debt strategy, although emerging reports indicate the Treasury Department may deploy cash holdings to repurchase older, higher-coupon bonds.
The US Dollar Index remained essentially unchanged at 99.01, holding steady following marginal weakness during the prior trading session.
Gold’s immediate price action will predominantly hinge on revelations from the PCE dataset and Warsh’s commentary regarding inflation trends and Federal Reserve policy direction.
