Gold Prices Decline Amid Rising Bond Yields and Geopolitical Tensions

Gold prices have experienced a significant decline over the past week, reversing what appeared to be a potential upward trend at the end of August. The recent downturn has been attributed to renewed tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as a more hawkish stance from Federal Reserve Chair Christopher Waller during the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, which has contributed to a recovery in the US dollar.

As gold prices fell below the 100-day moving average of $4,360, they also broke beneath the 50.0 Fibonacci retracement level of $4,328. This shift indicates a bearish trend for the precious metal, with buyers losing momentum from the previous month. Current bids around $4,300 are providing some support, but analysts warn that without a rebound, gold could drop towards the $4,000 to $4,130 range.

Compounding these challenges, US 10-year bond yields have surged to 4.80%, the highest level since January of the previous year, driven by rising yields in Europe and Japan as well. The combination of geopolitical instability and increasing bond yields is expected to negatively impact gold prices further as inflation concerns mount and traders anticipate a response from central banks.
