Goldman Sachs Maintains Bullish Outlook on Gold, Sets $4,000 Target

Goldman Sachs has reaffirmed its bullish stance on gold, suggesting that the recent decline from January's peak is merely a pause in the ongoing bull market. Tony Kim, the bank's global head of metals trading, indicated that gold is currently about 20% below its January high, but the fundamental drivers supporting its value remain intact. He emphasized that any dip toward $4,000 per ounce should be viewed as a buying opportunity rather than a sign of a trend reversal.

Two primary factors are contributing to the current market dynamics. First, uncertainty surrounding the policy direction of incoming Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh is creating volatility. Second, the ongoing US-Iran conflict has disrupted energy and metals markets, impacting inflation expectations and reserve accumulation. Despite these challenges, central bank demand for gold has surged, with purchases now estimated at 1,000 to 1,100 tonnes annually, significantly higher than the 400 to 500 tonnes bought before the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Kim noted that this central bank buying is crucial, as it reduces the available supply for other uses such as jewelry and ETFs, thereby supporting higher prices. However, demand from Asia, traditionally a strong market for gold, has weakened due to the Iran conflict and shifting priorities in countries like India, which are focusing on currency stability over gold accumulation. In contrast, silver remains a more volatile investment, driven largely by retail demand rather than institutional buying, with potential prices ranging widely based on market conditions.
