Hedge Fund Titan Dan Loeb Makes Strategic Bet on Bitcoin Miners Turned AI Powerhouses
Key Takeaways
- Billionaire investor Dan Loeb’s Third Point LLC has taken positions in four cryptocurrency mining companies pivoting to artificial intelligence infrastructure
- Third Point increased its Hut 8 holdings to $151.8 million while initiating positions in Riot Platforms, Core Scientific, and Applied Digital
- Third Point maintains a $194.47 million position in Jack Dorsey’s Block
- Each mining company has secured substantial multi-year contracts for AI data center services totaling billions in revenue
- This investment thesis capitalizes on the transition from cryptocurrency mining to more lucrative AI computing services
Prominent hedge fund manager Dan Loeb has strategically positioned his investment firm into companies that previously focused on cryptocurrency mining but are now pivoting toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. Third Point LLC revealed these holdings in its most recent 13F regulatory filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The firm’s largest holding in this sector is Hut 8, where Third Point expanded its investment by 51%, bringing the total position value to $151.8 million. Additionally, the fund established new positions in Riot Platforms, Core Scientific, and Applied Digital.
Beyond these mining-focused investments, Third Point maintains a substantial $194.47 million stake in Block, the financial technology firm led by Jack Dorsey.
The Strategic Pivot from Crypto Mining to AI Computing
Cryptocurrency mining, particularly Bitcoin, has faced mounting challenges including depressed digital asset valuations, escalating electricity expenses, and diminished mining rewards following halving events. These pressures have significantly compressed profit margins. However, as artificial intelligence demand surged, mining operators recognized an opportunity to repurpose their existing assets.
These companies possess substantial data center facilities and considerable power infrastructure—precisely what AI companies require for computational operations. This transition promises more predictable cash flows and enhanced profit margins compared to the volatility of cryptocurrency mining.
Recent financial results demonstrate the momentum behind this transformation.
Hut 8 announced second-quarter revenues reaching $74.9 million, representing an 81% increase compared to the prior year period. The firm continues expanding its River Bend data center facility located in Texas.
Riot Platforms delivered second-quarter revenues of $174.2 million, surpassing analyst projections by 14.6%. Most notably, the company recently finalized a two-decade agreement valued at $9.1 billion with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic.
Billion-Dollar Contracts Validate the Transformation
Core Scientific disclosed remarkable 109% revenue expansion to $164.2 million during the second quarter. This growth was partially fueled by a data center collaboration with AMD that could generate $14 billion in contracted revenues.
Applied Digital demonstrated even more impressive performance. The company’s fiscal fourth-quarter revenues soared 407% year-over-year to $258.7 million, exceeding analyst expectations by 181.5%. In June, Applied Digital secured a 15-year lease agreement worth $5.2 billion with a major U.S. cloud computing provider.
Similarly, Hut 8 announced a 15-year, $9.8 billion lease commitment in July to develop its Texas data center campus.
These extended contracts provide revenue visibility and stability for businesses that previously faced extreme volatility tied to cryptocurrency price fluctuations.
Block reported second-quarter revenues of $6.62 billion alongside earnings per share of $1.02, exceeding consensus estimates on both metrics. Earlier this year, the company reduced its workforce by over 4,000 positions as artificial intelligence technologies assumed many of those functions.
While Third Point’s investments in the three smaller mining companies each total less than $7 million, collectively they signal a strategic, diversified approach to this emerging trend. Instead of concentrating capital on a single company, Loeb has distributed risk across multiple operators executing the identical strategy—transitioning from cryptocurrency mining operations to artificial intelligence infrastructure providers.
