US Stocks Mixed as Treasury Yields Rise Amid Iran Negotiations

U.S. stocks closed mixed on September 24, 2026, as a rally in Meta Platforms Inc. helped offset losses in other sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 162.02 points, or 0.31%, to finish at 51,355.15, while the S&P 500 dipped slightly by 1.80 points, or 0.02%, closing at 7,704.22. The Nasdaq Composite, however, managed a small gain of 3.34 points, or 0.01%, ending at 26,939.37. The mixed results reflect a broader market dynamic, with notable gains in stocks like Meta, which rose by 4.50%, contrasting with declines in companies such as Arm, which fell by 7.88%.

The dollar strengthened against major currencies, buoyed by rising U.S. Treasury yields, which reached near multi-year highs. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note climbed to 5.19%, while the two-year yield rose to 4.92%. Federal Reserve officials indicated that further interest rate hikes may be necessary to combat inflation, with Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson suggesting that the central bank is considering additional measures. This backdrop of rising yields and inflation concerns has kept investors on edge, particularly as economic data showed initial jobless claims at 197,000, lower than expected, and new home sales for August exceeding estimates.

Market sentiment was also influenced by discussions between U.S. and Iranian officials regarding a potential phased arrangement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the U.S. blockade. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed a desire for progress before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. While these developments provided some relief to stocks and oil prices, traders remain cautious, as the actual implementation of any agreement is uncertain. WTI crude oil prices fluctuated, initially dropping before recovering to around $95.11 per barrel, reflecting the market's reaction to the news from Iran.
