How Brendan Gow Brings Discipline to Growth at Capital Haus
For Brendan Gow, Founder and Executive Chairman of Capital Haus, expansion has never been simply about pursuing every opportunity available. His approach is more selective. A decision needs to strengthen the organisation, make sense within its wider direction, and remain useful long after the initial opportunity has passed.
That perspective has been shaped by two decades across private wealth management, stockbroking, and investment management. Those years gave Brendan insight into both sides of financial services: how firms are built and how clients experience them.
Over time, he became increasingly conscious that technical capability alone did not always create the kind of client relationship he believed financial services should provide. When Brendan began thinking about a different model, he spoke directly with clients about what they wanted from a financial firm.
The answers were consistent. Clients wanted closer relationships, greater transparency, and more involvement in decisions affecting their wealth. Those conversations helped shape Capital Haus and established principles that still influence how Brendan approaches the company today.
As the business developed, the decisions became larger. Acquisitions offered a way to accelerate its development, but they also required Brendan to become more deliberate about where capital and leadership attention were being committed.
Looking back, he identifies “borrowing money to acquire businesses” as one of the more significant risks he was prepared to take. The financing itself is not the point he places emphasis on. What mattered was having enough conviction in the strategic value of the acquisition to make the commitment.
The experience helped refine the way he assesses opportunities. One of Brendan’s key considerations is adjacency. A new business or market becomes more relevant when it connects logically with something Capital Haus already understands or with a direction the company has
consciously chosen to pursue.
This matters because adding more does not automatically create more value. Every acquisition or market entry also brings new demands on capital, people, management attention, and culture.Financial performance remains important, but so does the contribution an opportunity can make to the organisation as a whole. The same thinking applies to international expansion. Entering another market should support a defined strategic purpose rather than becoming an objective in itself.
His own role has evolved alongside Capital Haus.Earlier in the company’s journey, Brendan was much closer to its daily operations. Today, more of his attention sits with the longer term direction of the business, the people who will help shape its future, and the decisions that may influence Capital Haus years from now.
He has also spoken about spending more time with younger members of the team, focusing on their development, careers, and the responsibilities they may eventually take on.The shift reflects a founder thinking beyond his own involvement. Brendan is increasingly focused on what needs to be built now so that the organisation can continue developing with strong leadership around it in the future.
That longer term perspective also makes priorities clearer. Not every attractive opportunity needs to be pursued, particularly when capital and leadership attention can create greater value elsewhere.Capital Haus has expanded considerably since its early years, but scale alone is not how Brendan measures whether a decision has worked. The more meaningful test is whether the company becomes more capable, more coherent, and better positioned for what comes next.Ambition has played an important role in the Capital Haus story. Discipline determines where that ambition is directed. For Brendan, building a stronger business is not about saying yes to more opportunities. It is about recognising which ones genuinely deserve a place in the future of Capital Haus.
