European Stock Markets Close Higher Amid Diverging U.S. Performance

Major European stock indices closed higher on October 16, 2026, marking a positive end to the trading week. The UK's FTSE 100 led the gains with an increase of 3.13%, while Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40 followed with gains of approximately 2% each. Italy's FTSE MIB also finished higher, albeit more modestly, contributing to a week of overall positive performance for all five major indices in the region.

In contrast, U.S. stock markets displayed a different trend as trading in Europe concluded. The Dow Jones Industrial Average remained relatively unchanged, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices faced declines, particularly the Nasdaq 100, which dropped by 1.63%. This divergence highlights ongoing pressures on technology and growth stocks in the U.S. market, with the Nasdaq Composite down 3.70% for the week.

European equities advanced despite rising benchmark yields, with France experiencing the largest increase. The 10-year yields in Germany, France, and the UK all rose, reflecting a complex interest-rate environment that continues to impact market sentiment. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar weakened against several currencies, including the New Zealand and Australian dollars, while precious metals remained largely stable.
