European Stock Markets Open Lower Amid Rising Oil Prices and Bond Yields

European stock markets opened lower on October 7, 2026, with major indices reflecting a cautious investor sentiment. The Eurostoxx index fell by 0.7%, while Germany's DAX decreased by 0.8%. Other notable declines included France's CAC 40 at 0.6%, the UK’s FTSE 100 down by 0.4%, Spain's IBEX dropping 0.4%, and Italy's FTSE MIB declining by 0.5%. This downturn contrasts sharply with a record-setting session on Wall Street the previous day, where the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached new highs.

One of the key factors impacting market sentiment is the rise in oil prices, with Brent crude trading above $100 per barrel. This increase is attributed to recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and potential supply disruptions from an approaching storm in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, bond yields remain elevated, with the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds exceeding 5.30%, posing challenges for equity markets as they approach multi-decade highs.

In France, there was a brief respite as government bond yields eased following a pledge from Marine Le Pen for spending cuts. However, this relief was short-lived, with 10-year French bond yields rebounding to 4.83% after hitting a low of 4.70% the previous day. Meanwhile, U.S. futures showed little change, with S&P 500 futures remaining flat and Nasdaq futures down by 0.1%. Market attention is now shifting to the upcoming $39 billion U.S. 10-year Treasury auction and the release of the Federal Reserve's September meeting minutes, both of which could significantly influence interest rates and market dynamics.
