Oman to redevelop Sultan Qaboos Port waterfront

Oman plans to redevelop the Sultan Qaboos Port waterfront in Muscat into a major tourism and leisure destination.

The sultanate is seeking to expand its tourism sector despite a regional decline in visitor numbers caused by the US-Iran war.

State-backed Oman Tourism Development Company, known as Omran, has signed an integrated tourism complex agreement with the heritage and tourism ministry. The agreement will position Wilayat Muttrah, a historic trading port in Muscat governorate, as a cultural destination.

The redevelopment will cover almost 1 million square metres, with more than 400,000 sq m to be developed in three phases, Omran said in a statement.

The master plan comprises four main districts: Port Souq (retail, shopping and leisure facilities); Port Gateway (hotel, retail and public spaces); Al Shatifi (residential and hotel accommodation, a waterfront promenade, restaurants and cafes) and Al Shatifi Hills (a mountain resort).

The cost and construction timeline were not disclosed.

Oman’s economy grew between April and June this year, and the projected budget deficit for 2026 was 14 percent lower than last year.

Under Vision 2040, Oman aims to expand its tourism industry and attract 11 million visitors a year.

Oman’s three- to five-star hotels recorded a double-digit revenue drop in the first half of 2026 as fewer travellers arrived from Arab countries and Europe, according to data from the state-owned National Center for Statistics and Information.
