Instacart’s Clementine AI Turns One Message Into a Grocery Cart

Instacart launched an artificial intelligence shopping assistant called Clementine on Wednesday (Sept. 9) for shoppers in the United States and Canada. It combines a customer’s purchase history with real-time store inventory to build a cart from a single message, like “high-protein easy dinners for two,” Instacart said.

The assistant runs on 1.6 billion lifetime Instacart orders, a 2 billion-item catalog, and 10 million daily inventory signals from nearly 100,000 stores, across more than 2,200 retail banners.

“We’ve spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work,” Instacart CEO Chris Rogers said. More than 80% of Americans say deciding what to make for dinner causes them stress, according to a Harris Poll survey Instacart commissioned, and nearly a third say the decision itself, not the cooking, is the hardest part.

Instacart is not the first mover in AI grocery assistants. Kroger announced an expanded Google Cloud partnership on Jan. 11, deploying Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience nationwide. The tool lets a shopper turn “I want to prepare vegan tomato soup” into a recipe with ingredients added to a cart in one click. Albertsons launched its own assistant in December across Safeway, Vons and Jewel-Osco, powered by OpenAI. The tool cuts an average 46-minute shopping trip to as little four minutes, Albertsons said.

Why Grocery AI Needs Live Inventory Data

Grocery inventory turns over hourly. Prices can shift within the same day. An AI assistant that recommends an item that’s out of stock breaks a customer’s trust on the spot, according to Paz.ai’s analysis of AI shopping tools. That is the problem Instacart, Kroger and Albertsons are each trying to solve: pairing a customer’s purchase history with live inventory data, rather than relying on a static product catalog the way a general retailer might.

Instacart’s own numbers already point that way. Orders placed with Clementine during testing carried more items than a typical Instacart basket, the company said. In the first quarter of 2026, Instacart’s average order value was $113, up 3% year over year, PYMNTS reported. Demand for the category is real: 64% of shoppers expect to use AI agents for shopping at least occasionally within the next two years, and 30% expect to use them frequently or almost always, according to PYMNTS Intelligence’s Global Digital Shopping Index report “The AI-Powered Shopper Has Arrived.”

The Real Fight Is Over Whose Inventory Data Is Better

Each company is betting on a different edge. Kroger has decades of loyalty-card purchase history built on its own store footprint. Albertsons is selling speed. Instacart’s edge is breadth rather than depth: Its inventory data spans nearly 100,000 stores across more than 2,200 retail banners, wider coverage than any single grocery chain can match on its own. That breadth is also why Instacart is licensing the same underlying technology to retailers directly through Cart Assistant. The white-label version now runs at Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group and Woodman’s, with Aldi U.S., Harmons, The Save Mart Companies and Stew Leonard’s expected to follow.

None of that matters if the item isn’t actually on the shelf. A recommendation is worthless the moment a customer shows up and the product is gone. That is the real race across grocery right now. Not which company builds the smartest AI, but whose inventory data is accurate and current enough to be trusted at checkout, store by store.
