Interest Rate Expectations Shift Following Recent Central Bank Meetings

Recent developments in central bank meetings have led to notable changes in interest rate expectations across several major economies. The European Central Bank (ECB) is now pricing in a 99% probability of a rate hike at its next meeting, with expectations for a total increase of 46 basis points (bps) by year-end. Similarly, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) has a 75% probability of a rate hike at its upcoming meeting, with a projected total increase of 42 bps by the end of the year.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) raised interest rates by 25 bps as anticipated, but the accompanying statement was perceived as dovish, indicating a reduced appetite for further tightening. The RBNZ noted that future policy decisions will depend on the balance of risks to medium-term inflation, suggesting a more cautious approach moving forward. In contrast, the Bank of Canada (BoC) maintained its current rates but adopted a more hawkish tone, warning of increased upside risks to inflation and removing previous language that described the policy rate as 'appropriate.'

In the United States, the Federal Reserve has experienced volatility in interest rate pricing following recent speeches by its officials. After a hawkish address at the Jackson Hole Symposium, expectations for a September rate hike surged to 67%, but have since stabilized around 60%. Fed Governor Christopher Waller's recent comments have led to a dovish repricing, with the probability of a rate hike dropping to 50%. Waller emphasized the importance of upcoming inflation data in determining the Fed's next steps, expressing a willingness to wait for signs of disinflation before making further adjustments.
