Japan's Inflation Data Released as Bank of Japan Prepares for Rate Hike

Japan is set to release its national consumer price index (CPI) data for August today, coinciding with a significant policy decision from the Bank of Japan (BoJ). The market is anticipating a quarter-point rate hike to 1.25%, which would be the highest level since 1993. This increase is already largely priced in by swap markets, making the CPI data less impactful for traders focused on the BoJ's meeting and Governor Kazuo Ueda's subsequent press conference.

The Tokyo area CPI figures, released three weeks ago, indicated a core inflation rate of 1.8% year on year for August, slightly up from 1.7% in July and in line with forecasts. Economists expect the national core CPI to mirror this trend, remaining at 1.8%, which still falls short of the BoJ's 2% target. Despite the steady core readings, producer price inflation has accelerated to its highest level in over three years, suggesting ongoing cost pressures in the economy.

As the BoJ concludes its two-day policy meeting, analysts note that the CPI print is likely to be viewed as a confirmation of existing trends rather than a decisive factor for the board's decision. Governor Ueda's press conference later today is expected to provide further insights into the central bank's future tightening plans, especially in light of recent wage data and a weaker yen. This would mark the BoJ's sixth rate increase since it began moving away from its ultra-loose monetary policy in 2024.
