Key Economic Events in Asia on September 18, 2026: Japan and Australia in Focus

On September 18, 2026, significant economic events are anticipated in the Asian timezone, particularly concerning Japan and Australia. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is expected to announce a rate hike, with inflation data for August indicating a core consumer price index (CPI) increase of 1.8% year-on-year, surpassing forecasts of 1.7%. This rise brings the core-core measure to 2.0%, closely aligning with the BOJ's target of 2%. Although the inflation data is notable, it is not expected to heavily influence the BOJ's decision, which appears to have already been agreed upon prior to the announcement.

The BOJ's decision is scheduled for around 0300 GMT, with a news conference by Governor Kazuo Ueda following at 0630 GMT. Analysts suggest that the timing of the announcement may vary slightly, but the rate hike is widely anticipated. In addition to Japan's developments, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will have its Governor, Michele Bullock, speaking at 9:30 AM local time, which corresponds to 2330 GMT. The RBA is currently in a rate hike cycle, having raised its cash rate by 25 basis points in the first three meetings of 2026, with expectations of further increases due to persistent inflation pressures. A rate hike is projected at the RBA's upcoming meeting on September 28-29, with market pricing indicating a 70-75% likelihood of this outcome.
