Wall Street Economists Adjust Core PCE Forecasts Following CPI Data
Market Movers This Week: CPI Report, Oracle (ORCL) Earnings, and Soaring Diesel Costs
Quick Overview
- Friday’s August CPI data could influence Fed policy after job growth significantly exceeded expectations
- August employment figures showed 162,000 new positions, crushing the 55,000 consensus estimate
- Oracle’s Thursday earnings release comes as stock trades down nearly 20% year-to-date amid balance sheet worries
- Diesel fuel reaches unprecedented $5.85/gallon as Middle East tensions and Eastern European conflict disrupt supply
- Apple’s Wednesday showcase expected to feature iPhone 18 Pro lineup and foldable device debut
Market participants are bracing for an eventful week dominated by critical inflation readings, significant corporate earnings releases, and escalating energy prices that could trigger substantial market movements.
Friday’s August Consumer Price Index release stands as the week’s centerpiece. Following last month’s robust employment gain of 162,000 positions—nearly triple the anticipated 55,000—market watchers are questioning whether inflation metrics will compel the Federal Reserve to implement a September interest rate increase.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has consistently emphasized price stability as his primary mandate. Inflation has persisted above the central bank’s 2% objective for approximately five years.
“Price stability is not self-executing, nor is inflation necessarily mean-reverting,” Warsh stated. “It is the Fed’s job to deliver stable prices.”
Market expectations for a September rate adjustment stood near even odds entering the week. Thursday’s Producer Price Index figures will provide preliminary insight ahead of Friday’s consumer inflation data.

Oracle’s Financial Report in Focus
Thursday brings Oracle’s highly anticipated quarterly results. The technology giant’s shares have tumbled nearly 20% year-to-date and roughly 30% over the trailing twelve months. The selloff primarily reflects investor anxiety regarding the leverage Oracle has accumulated to finance its aggressive data center expansion strategy.
Bank of America analyst Tal Liani maintains an optimistic outlook heading into the announcement. His projections call for infrastructure-as-a-service revenue to surge 25% sequentially and 116% year-over-year. Additionally, he anticipates Cloud SaaS revenue expansion of approximately 12.8% for the period.
“We favor the risk/reward of Oracle,” Liani commented, suggesting the Street may be underestimating the company’s revenue trajectory linked to data center execution.
Adobe releases results the same day, marking its first earnings under new leadership. Macy’s also reports Thursday, offering perspective on consumer discretionary spending patterns.
Diesel Prices Reach Historic Peak
United States diesel prices surged to an unprecedented $5.85 per gallon Friday, eclipsing the prior peak of $5.816 established in June 2022. Escalating conflict involving Iran has disrupted refined petroleum product shipments from the Persian Gulf region, while Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian refining capacity have constrained output from a major global diesel supplier.
Domestic distillate inventories have fallen to record lows for this calendar period, with East Coast supplies hitting unprecedented deficits. This supply crunch arrives precisely as northeastern regions enter the winter heating demand season.
“Record diesel will start funneling down into the economy,” observed Patrick de Haan from GasBuddy.
Apple conducts its annual product presentation Wednesday, with expectations for the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max models, and a foldable iPhone introduction. The event marks the first major launch under newly appointed CEO John Ternus.
Additional retail earnings from Casey’s General Stores, American Eagle Outfitters, and Kroger complete the week’s corporate calendar.
