Micron (MU) Stock Crushes Nvidia With 1,313% Five-Year Gain—What’s Next?
Key Takeaways
- Over the past five years, Micron (MU) has delivered approximately 1,313% in returns, surpassing Nvidia’s 912% performance during the identical timeframe.
- The stock finished trading at $1,016.59, bringing its market capitalization to roughly $1.15 trillion, a massive jump from $104.2 billion in 2021.
- High-bandwidth memory (HBM) powered by AI applications has fueled growth, with current demand exceeding supply by more than 100%.
- The company delivered record fiscal third-quarter revenue of $41.46 billion, a dramatic increase from $9.3 billion in the prior-year period.
- Analysts project $50.4 billion in quarterly revenue and adjusted earnings per share of $30.89 when results are announced on September 30.
Micron Technology has emerged as one of the most impressive performers in the market over the last half-decade. Closing Friday’s session at $1,016.59, MU has generated approximately 1,313% in total returns across five years, per StatMuse data. That performance eclipses Nvidia’s already remarkable 912% gain during the same window.
The company’s market capitalization has skyrocketed from approximately $104.2 billion at the close of 2021 to roughly $1.15 trillion currently. This represents more than $1 trillion in added market value over that span.
While Sandisk and Comfort Systems USA technically post higher raw five-year returns, neither maintained S&P 500 membership throughout the entire period. Sandisk only regained independence in February 2025 and entered the index in November. Among long-standing index components, Micron’s performance stands unmatched.
Year-to-date in 2026, the shares have climbed between 256% and 260%, breaking through the $1,000 threshold last week. The stock currently trades roughly 20% beneath its 52-week peak of $1,255.
The AI Revolution Transforms Memory Economics
High-bandwidth memory has evolved into an essential building block for AI acceleration hardware. Modern GPUs demand rapid access to massive data pools, and HBM technology delivers exactly that capability. Current demand levels exceed available production capacity by a factor of more than two.
Micron is aggressively expanding to capture this opportunity. The firm intends to increase its HBM wafer production to approximately 100,000 units monthly by the end of the year. This persistent supply constraint has granted Micron exceptional pricing leverage, driving both revenue and profit margins far beyond historical benchmarks.
The company’s fiscal third quarter generated record-breaking revenue of $41.46 billion, versus $9.3 billion in the corresponding quarter one year prior. Such explosive expansion has driven MU’s forward price-to-earnings ratio down to approximately six times, an unusually low valuation given the growth trajectory.
Critical Earnings Report Looms on September 30
Micron faces its next major market examination on September 30 when quarterly financial results are released. Wall Street consensus calls for approximately $50.4 billion in revenue alongside adjusted earnings per share of $30.89. These figures would represent substantial increases from the prior-year results of $11.32 billion in revenue and $2.84 in EPS.
However, not all market observers share the prevailing enthusiasm. Some analysts have flagged indicators suggesting potential momentum deceleration. Trading volumes have retreated to levels not witnessed since early April, before the stock commenced its significant ascent. At that juncture, MU was changing hands below $400.
The current price-to-earnings multiple of approximately 23 times earnings trades marginally below the S&P 500’s average of 24. Skeptics contend this valuation embeds assumptions of sustained exceptional HBM demand, prolonged supply shortages extending multiple years, and continued aggressive capital expenditure from major technology companies. This scenario leaves minimal margin for disappointment.
The memory semiconductor sector has traditionally exhibited cyclical characteristics. Additional production capacity from Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix could trigger oversupply conditions should AI infrastructure investment decelerate. Micron’s upcoming September 30 earnings announcement will provide the most definitive indication of whether this current expansion cycle maintains momentum or approaches exhaustion.
