Micron (MU) Stock Drops Despite Strong NAND Flash Market Share Gains

      Key Highlights

      • Micron shares declined an additional 1.1% on Wednesday following Tuesday’s steep 7% decline, pressured by rising bond yields
      • The top five NAND flash memory manufacturers saw combined revenue soar 77% sequentially to $68.87 billion in Q2
      • Micron captured 15.1% of NAND flash revenue in Q2, climbing from 13.9% previously and surpassing Kioxia to secure third position
      • Ark Invest’s Cathie Wood identified high-bandwidth memory as the semiconductor sector’s “most cyclical” and “most commoditized” segment
      • Wall Street forecasts Micron earnings of $31.27 per share for the upcoming report versus $3.03 last year, with a consensus Buy rating and $1,537.50 average target

Shares of Micron Technology (MU) retreated 1.1% during early Wednesday trading, hovering near $947, after tumbling 7% in the previous session. Semiconductor stocks faced widespread selling pressure as climbing bond yields raised questions about future artificial intelligence hardware investment.

The consecutive declines occurred even as fresh data revealed Micron is steadily expanding its presence in the memory chip sector.

Market intelligence firm Trendforce disclosed Wednesday that the five largest publicly traded NAND flash memory manufacturers collectively generated $68.87 billion in Q2 revenue, representing a remarkable 77% sequential increase.

Micron’s portion of the market expanded as well. The company’s NAND flash revenue share rose to 15.1% during Q2, advancing from 13.9% in the preceding quarter, allowing it to leapfrog Japan’s Kioxia and claim the third-place ranking, trailing only Samsung and SK Hynix.

According to Trendforce’s analysis, Micron generated $11.85 billion in NAND flash revenue during the quarter, marking a 99.2% sequential surge—the strongest growth rate among the top five competitors.

NAND flash technology represents approximately one-quarter of Micron’s overall revenue mix. DRAM chips and high-bandwidth memory comprise the remaining portions.

      Ark Invest’s Cautious Stance

The bullish memory narrative hasn’t convinced everyone. Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood revealed she’s avoiding AI semiconductor companies heavily dependent on memory products, characterizing high-bandwidth memory as the “most cyclical” and “most commoditized” component within the chip supply ecosystem.

Wood suggested that exceptionally elevated memory pricing might incentivize the industry to develop alternative solutions that bypass the constraint altogether. Her fund favors investments in Cerebras Systems (CBRS) and Groq, companies she believes aren’t reliant on high-bandwidth memory technology.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra challenged this viewpoint in June, describing memory as a “strategic asset” crucial to the artificial intelligence revolution. The semiconductor maker has also secured 16 long-term supply agreements with customers totaling approximately $100 billion in aggregate revenue extending through 2030.

      Analyst Outlook

Micron’s upcoming quarterly earnings release is anticipated around September 22, 2026. Analyst consensus calls for earnings of $31.27 per share, a substantial increase from $3.03 in the year-ago period. Revenue projections stand at $50.81 billion, compared with $11.31 billion previously.

The stock maintains a consensus Buy recommendation, with analysts setting an average price objective of $1,537.50.

Citigroup reaffirmed its Buy rating on August 7 while reducing its price target to $1,150. KeyBanc preserved its Overweight stance and increased its target to $1,750 in July. Cantor Fitzgerald elevated its objective to $2,000 in June.

From a technical perspective, MU currently trades approximately 5.6% above its 20-day moving average of $895.86 while positioned 1.7% beneath its 50-day moving average of $962.57. The relative strength index registers 52.61, indicating neutral momentum conditions.

Market participants are monitoring $1,012 as the immediate resistance threshold, with $891.50 representing potential downside support near the 20-day moving average level.
