MP Materials (MP) Stock: Is Now the Time to Buy After Record Q2 Performance?
Key Takeaways
- Second quarter revenue reached $108.49 million for MP Materials, marking an 89% increase compared to the prior year and surpassing Wall Street’s $96.89 million projection
- Revenue composition transformed dramatically as the company pivoted from concentrate sales to refined products, with NdPr oxide and metal revenue soaring from $25 million to $95 million
- A Department of Defense agreement delivered $17.6 million to MP when NdPr prices dropped beneath the contractual floor of $110 per kilogram
- Institutional stakeholders control 52.55% of outstanding shares, with Odyssean LLC expanding its holdings by 236.7% during Q2
- Analyst consensus remains at “Buy” with a mean price objective of $78.21, while shares currently change hands near $60.25
Shares of MP Materials (MP) began Wednesday’s session at $60.25, trading approximately 45% beneath the 52-week peak of $100.25, despite operational improvements across the business.
The rare earth materials producer disclosed Q2 2026 revenue totaling $108.49 million, representing an 89% year-over-year climb that exceeded the Street’s $96.89 million forecast. Adjusted EBITDA reversed from a negative $12.5 million to a positive $28.5 million during the comparable timeframe.
The quarter delivered -$0.01 in earnings per share, aligning with analyst projections. This marks an improvement from the -$0.13 EPS reported in the year-ago period.
The revenue transformation stems largely from strategic product positioning. MP has pivoted from marketing unprocessed rare-earth concentrate, historically exported to Chinese refineries, toward selling processed NdPr oxide and metal products that command premium pricing.
During Q2 2025, the company generated approximately $25 million from NdPr oxide and metal sales, complemented by $12 million from concentrate. In the most recent quarter, concentrate sales dropped to zero while oxide and metal revenue climbed to $95 million.
Escalating trade tensions between Washington and Beijing catalyzed this strategic pivot. MP ceased concentrate exports beginning last April, redirecting all processing operations to its Mountain Pass operation in California.
Government Price Protection Activates
MP collected $17.6 million in Defense Department-linked price stabilization payments throughout Q2. The Pentagon established a guaranteed minimum price of $110 per kilogram for MP’s NdPr output. When spot market prices fell beneath this threshold, federal payments covered the gap.
This compensation appeared in quarterly financial results and stems from the collaborative agreement unveiled last July.
Institutional Backing Strengthens
Among institutional movements, Odyssean LLC expanded its MP Materials stake by 236.7% during Q2, accumulating 28,273 shares with an approximate value of $1.58 million.
Additional firms followed suit. Oak Thistle LLC established a fresh position valued near $1.54 million. Amundi increased its holdings by 260.2% in Q1, currently controlling 385,001 shares worth $18.58 million. Institutional entities collectively hold 52.55% of the company.
Regarding insider activity, Chief Operating Officer Michael Rosenthal acquired 10,000 shares at $54.30 per share in June, totaling a $543,000 investment. Chief Executive James Litinsky divested 185,167 shares at an average price of $69.14 in early June, representing a 1.57% decrease in his holdings.
Wall Street Outlook and Forecasts
Morgan Stanley maintained an “overweight” designation on August 19. Citigroup preserved a “positive” stance in July. JPMorgan reduced its price objective from $75 down to $60 while sustaining “overweight.” Barclays lowered its target from $69 to $65, also retaining “overweight.”
The aggregated view from 16 analysts registers as “Buy,” featuring a mean price target of $78.21. A single analyst assigns the stock a “Sell” rating.
Wall Street anticipates MP will deliver -$0.07 EPS for the complete fiscal year. The equity maintains a market capitalization of $10.73 billion with a beta coefficient of 1.88.
MP’s upcoming catalyst involves its second magnetic manufacturing facility, designated 10X, scheduled for commissioning in 2028.
