MP Materials (MP) Stock Soars 9% on DOE Funding and Rare Earth Sector Strength
Key Highlights
- Shares of MP Materials surged more than 9% on Friday, reaching $60.16
- Seven critical mineral projects received Department of Energy backing, igniting sector enthusiasm
- Q2 2026 results showed revenue soaring 89% with neodymium-praseodymium production up 51%
- The Materials sector topped all others Friday with a 2.09% advance
- Wall Street consensus leans toward Buy with a $71.79 average target price
Shares of MP Materials (MP) advanced more than 9% during Friday’s session, settling at $60.16, as government policy developments and impressive quarterly results combined to lift critical minerals equities.
The Materials sector outperformed the broader market, posting a 2.09% gain. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 ticked up 0.42% and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.31%.
The primary driver emerged from Washington, where the Department of Energy announced the selection of seven initiatives aimed at bolstering domestic critical mineral processing infrastructure, battery production capabilities, and recycling operations. The announcement resonated strongly with investors tracking the sector.
This federal commitment builds on President Trump’s “Unleashing American Energy” directive, which has maintained domestic mineral security as a policy priority throughout 2026.
MP owns and operates the Mountain Pass complex in California, representing North America’s sole large-scale rare earth extraction and processing operation. This unique positioning provides a competitive advantage as policymakers prioritize reducing reliance on Chinese-dominated supply networks.
The emerging “Physical AI” sector is generating additional interest in MP’s domestically-sourced rare earth permanent magnets. With escalating demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and robotic systems, the raw materials enabling these technologies are capturing heightened investor focus.
Impressive Q2 Performance Bolsters Confidence
MP’s second-quarter 2026 financial performance provided substantial support for the stock’s advance. Revenue climbed 89% compared to the prior year, while neodymium-praseodymium production increased 51%. These metrics provided concrete evidence of operational momentum.
The company continues expanding its vertical integration strategy with magnet production capabilities and defense sector agreements, diversifying revenue streams beyond concentrate sales.
However, MP continues to record negative cash flow. Significant capital expenditures for facility expansion mean the company has not yet transformed increased production volumes into consistent profitability. This remains an important consideration for investors evaluating the stock.
Charts Show Technical Strength
From a chart perspective, MP climbed above both its 100-day and 200-day simple moving averages on Friday. The shares also traded above their 20-day and 50-day moving averages.
The MACD indicator registered above its signal line with a positive histogram reading, suggesting intensifying upward momentum.
The stock experienced a bearish “death cross” pattern in July when the 50-day moving average dropped below the 200-day line. Since then, it has recovered significantly from its July trough. The 52-week trading range spans from $37.81 to $100.25.
Near-term resistance appears at the $61 level, while support is located around $53.50.
Regarding analyst coverage, JPMorgan sustained an Overweight rating with a $60 price objective on July 29. Needham reaffirmed Buy with a $73 target on July 22. Barclays maintained Overweight with a $65 target on July 16. The Street’s consensus recommendation is Buy with an average price target of $71.79.
MP also represents a component holding in the VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (REMX) at a 6.27% portfolio weight and the Sprott Critical Materials ETF (SETM) at 3.19%.
MP stock traded up 9.3% at $60.16 at publication time Friday.
