Nasdaq Reaches All-Time High as September Payroll Miss Dims Rate Hike Outlook

      Quick Summary

      • Tesla’s third-quarter vehicle deliveries reached 486,532 units, surpassing Wall Street’s projections.
      • The Nasdaq Composite achieved an all-time closing high following a surprisingly weak September employment report.
      • Nike stock hovers near its lowest price point in 12 years amid prolonged restructuring challenges.
      • G7 nations committed to releasing 100 million barrels from strategic petroleum stockpiles.
      • Bitcoin surged more than 3%, boosting shares of cryptocurrency-related companies including Coinbase and Strategy.

American equity markets rallied Friday after disappointing employment figures diminished speculation about further monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve. The electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla provided additional momentum with better-than-anticipated quarterly delivery figures.

The Nasdaq Composite index finished the session at an unprecedented level. Chip manufacturers posted strong gains while Bitcoin advanced as market participants rotated capital toward higher-risk investments.

      Tesla Surpasses Quarterly Delivery Forecasts

Tesla announced third-quarter vehicle deliveries totaling 486,532 units. The figure exceeded Wall Street consensus estimates of approximately 456,900 vehicles.

Improved sales momentum in European markets contributed to the better-than-expected performance. The automaker had faced headwinds in that geographic region throughout much of the previous year.

Tesla stock advanced roughly 5% following the announcement. The company has scheduled the release of complete third-quarter financial statements for October 21.

Weak Payroll Data Propels Nasdaq to New Peak

The primary catalyst for broader market gains originated from government employment statistics. September nonfarm payrolls increased by only 29,000 positions, significantly undershooting economist projections of around 90,000 new jobs.

Previously reported monthly data also underwent downward revisions. The disappointing hiring figures lowered market expectations for additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases during the current month.

Government bond yields declined in response to the employment report. Technology equities benefited from the move, having faced selling pressure after the 10-year Treasury yield recently reached 5.34%, a level not seen in 24 years.

The Nasdaq established a fresh closing record following the data release. Nvidia climbed approximately 2.5% while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index advanced more than 3%.

Nike Continues Trading Near Decade-Plus Lows

The broad-based rally left some equities behind. Nike shares declined further after management issued disappointing guidance and acknowledged persistent weakness in Chinese markets.

The athletic apparel giant’s Jordan division and certain lifestyle product categories continue underperforming. The stock has retreated to price levels last observed approximately 12 years earlier.

Chief Executive Officer Elliott Hill is focused on revitalizing Nike’s product portfolio and repairing strained relationships with traditional retail distribution partners. The organization recently implemented additional workforce reductions.

Nike management has indicated that substantial financial improvements from current restructuring initiatives may not materialize until 2029 or 2030. The extended turnaround timeframe is intensifying investor scrutiny ahead of the company’s investor day presentation scheduled for November.

Petroleum Prices Decline Following G7 Reserve Announcement

Commodity markets also experienced volatility. G7 member nations reached an agreement to release 100 million barrels of diesel, crude oil and other petroleum products through the International Energy Agency’s coordinated reserve mechanism.

The initiative seeks to moderate fuel costs following supply disruptions connected to the Iran conflict. Crude oil prices fell more than $3 per barrel on the announcement, pushing Brent crude below the $100 threshold.

Declining energy prices may help moderate broader inflation pressures. Such relief could provide the Federal Reserve with additional flexibility when setting monetary policy in upcoming meetings.

Digital Currency and Related Equities Stage Recovery

Cryptocurrency markets responded favorably to the improved macroeconomic environment. Bitcoin appreciated approximately 3.4% during the trading session.

Publicly traded companies with cryptocurrency exposure participated in the advance. Coinbase and Strategy, the company previously operating as MicroStrategy, each rose roughly 3% as investors increased allocations to digital asset proxies.

Declining Treasury yields, lower petroleum prices and the weak employment report collectively supported Bitcoin pricing after several weeks of downward pressure. Market participants are now focusing attention on forthcoming inflation statistics and third-quarter corporate earnings releases.

The critical question facing investors is whether moderating economic indicators can produce lower financing costs without signaling a more severe contraction in American economic activity.
