New Zealand Manufacturing Sector Growth Slows in August

New Zealand's manufacturing sector continued to expand in August, although at a slower pace, according to the latest BNZ-BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index. The seasonally adjusted index registered at 53.1, a decline from July's 54.3 but still above the long-term average of 52.5. This marks over a year of continuous growth for the sector, indicating resilience despite a cooling trend.

The employment sub-index, which remained flat at 50.0, is particularly noteworthy as it signals a potential shift towards job losses if it dips below this threshold. New Orders and Finished Stocks showed stronger performance, with readings of 54.9 and 56.4 respectively, suggesting that underlying demand remains stable. However, production and deliveries softened to 54.2 and 52.6, indicating a slight easing in activity.

Respondents expressed increased negative sentiment, with 55.7% of comments categorized as pessimistic. Factors such as cost of living pressures and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East were cited as concerns. Despite these challenges, BusinessNZ's Director of Advocacy, Catherine Beard, emphasized the importance of the sustained expansion in manufacturing, while BNZ Senior Economist Doug Steel noted that the three-month moving average of the PMI is still trending upward, reflecting overall sector resilience amid volatility.
