Nike (NKE) Stock Plummets to Decade-Plus Low While Appointing Walmart Veteran as CCO
Key Highlights
- Nike shares settled at $38.59, marking a 12-year nadir, with 2026 losses reaching 38% through August 26
- Shares currently trade 78.55% beneath their November 2021 high, at price points not witnessed since August 2014
- The athletic apparel giant appointed Jane Ewing, previously with Walmart, to serve as Chief Commercial Officer beginning September 7
- The Greater China market has experienced revenue contraction across eight successive quarters
- Analysts maintain a neutral stance on NKE with a consensus target of $50.05, suggesting potential gains of 30%
Shares of Nike concluded Wednesday’s trading session at $38.59, reaching a 12-year trough with an intraday floor of $38.17. The athletic footwear and apparel manufacturer has witnessed a 38% decline in 2026 through August 26, positioning it for its most challenging annual performance since 1993.
Notably, 1993 marked Michael Jordan’s initial departure from professional basketball.
A Barchart analysis drawing parallels between 1993 and 2026 has gained significant attention across financial circles. The similarities are remarkable. During 1993, Nike’s valuation had already depreciated approximately 40% prior to Jordan’s October retirement declaration. In the current year, NKE had already retreated about 29% before China-related concerns surfaced in April.
The operational challenges driving both downturns are substantive.
Struggles in China and Deteriorating Financial Metrics
During 1993, revenue contracted 3.6% while net earnings plummeted 18%. In 2026, China EBIT has collapsed 45%, with the corporation reporting eight consecutive quarters of shrinking Greater China revenues. A non-recurring tariff reimbursement also artificially enhanced the latest quarter’s reported profitability.
The monthly Relative Strength Index registers 28.64, falling beneath the 30 threshold that typically indicates oversold territory. Such monthly chart readings are uncommon. Trading volume has progressively increased throughout the selloff, suggesting strong conviction among sellers. Two converging trend channels indicate shares could potentially test the low $30s before year-end.
Current support rests at $38.41. Overhead resistance stands at $43.21.
Against this challenging environment, Nike is executing a key executive appointment. The corporation revealed it has secured Jane Ewing as its new Chief Commercial Officer, with her tenure commencing September 7.
Ewing dedicated nearly 14 years to Walmart, occupying positions including senior advisor for Walmart China, acting CEO of Sam’s Club China, senior vice president overseeing Sustainability, and senior vice president of International Operations. Previously, she contributed approximately nine years to Diageo in an executive global capacity.
Nike’s Strategic Vision for Its New Executive
Chief Executive Elliott Hill stated that Nike has “repositioned sport at our core,” reconstructed its product development pipeline, and enhanced customer engagement through Nike Direct and traditional wholesale channels. He characterized Ewing as a “builder” possessing international expertise and deep connections to athletic culture.
In her capacity as Chief Commercial Officer, Ewing will oversee Nike’s worldwide marketplace division, encompassing sales operations and Nike Direct. Her responsibilities include fortifying retail collaborations, enhancing both digital platforms and physical store experiences, and discovering emerging growth opportunities across global markets.
This appointment represents a component of Nike’s comprehensive recovery initiative under Hill’s leadership. The running category has demonstrated improvement, though Converse and the China operations continue facing headwinds.
Analyst consensus currently positions NKE as a Hold, derived from eight Buy recommendations, 15 Hold ratings, and two Sell opinions issued during the preceding three months. The mean price objective stands at $50.05, implying approximately 30% appreciation from present trading levels.
Following 1993’s downturn, Nike achieved returns of 63.7% in 1994, 88.9% in 1995, and 73.6% in 1996. Historical performance offers no assurance of future results.
Nike has calendared an investor presentation for November 16 and 17. Refreshed Sportswear product launches aren’t anticipated until spring 2027.
