Nike (NKE) Stock Plunges 49%: Analysts Remain Cautious Amid Brand Struggles
Key Takeaways
- NKE shares hover around $38, marking a nearly 50% decline over 12 months and hitting levels not seen in over a decade
- Fiscal 2026 revenue remained stagnant at approximately $46.4B—matching FY2022 figures—while free cash flow plummeted from $6.62B to just $2.18B
- The brand’s standing among back-to-school shoppers collapsed from 92.5% in 2021 to a record low of 38.2% in 2025, with only a modest rebound to 45.8% in 2026
- Wall Street sentiment remains cautious: JPMorgan shifted to Underweight while the consensus rating holds at Hold with an average target of $52.94
- Investors are looking to the November 2026 Capital Markets Day as a pivotal moment, though margin recovery isn’t anticipated before the first half of 2027
Nike (NKE) shares are languishing near $38, reflecting a brutal 49% drawdown from peak levels over the trailing twelve months. The athletic apparel giant is now trading at prices last seen more than a decade ago. With a 52-week trading band stretching from $37.95 to $76.97, the stock continues to trade materially below its 50-day moving average of $41.62 and its 200-day moving average of $46.34.
The underlying financials paint a challenging picture. Fiscal 2026 revenues settled around $46.4B—essentially unchanged from FY2022—while net income was slashed nearly in half to $3.11B. Perhaps most alarming, free cash flow cratered from $6.62B in FY2024 to a mere $2.18B two years later.
The company’s latest quarterly report provided a glimmer of hope. Nike delivered Q4 earnings per share of $0.20, surpassing the Street’s $0.11 estimate. Top-line results of $10.97B also exceeded the $10.85B consensus, although revenue still declined 1.1% on a year-over-year basis.
Yet the earnings beat hasn’t sparked a wave of bullish calls. JPMorgan downgraded the stock to Underweight, Truist lowered its stance to Hold with a $42 price target, and both RBC and Stifel are holding at $45. The overall Street consensus remains at Hold, with a mean price target landing at $52.94.
Brand Erosion and Distribution Headwinds
One of the most troubling indicators for Nike’s long-term outlook is the deterioration in brand perception. During the crucial back-to-school shopping season, Nike’s popularity in retail surveys hit 92.5% in 2021. That figure nosedived to an unprecedented low of 38.2% in 2025, per Stifel research. While there’s been a modest recovery to 45.8% in 2026, the brand remains far from its former dominance.
The strategic pivot toward direct-to-consumer channels came at a cost, straining key wholesale relationships. Nike is now working to repair these partnerships, including its connection with Foot Locker. However, softer Q2 results from Dick’s Sporting Goods point to persistent weakness across the athletic footwear category.
The company has also shuttered 11 U.S. retail locations, including a California store, as part of an ongoing effort to optimize its physical presence.
While new lifestyle-oriented products are in development, management doesn’t expect them to gain meaningful traction until the latter half of 2027. Extended industry lead times make it difficult to accelerate this timeline.
The Path Forward
CEO Elliott Hill has been actively engaging with the investment community, including a recent trip to London in late August, though he’s acknowledged that the turnaround is progressing more slowly than anticipated.
All eyes are now on Nike’s November 2026 Capital Markets Day. This event will be critical in determining whether the company can articulate a credible path forward or if investor skepticism will deepen.
Institutional Positioning
Large institutional holders have taken divergent approaches. B. Metzler seel. Sohn & Co. AG reduced its NKE holdings by 16.6% during Q2, offloading 34,836 shares while maintaining 174,933 shares worth approximately $7.18M. On the flip side, Harris Associates boosted its stake by 72.3% in Q4, and J. Stern & Co. dramatically increased its position by more than 49,000%.
Corporate insiders have been net sellers recently. Over the past 90 days, insiders disposed of 26,142 shares totaling roughly $1.17M. Adding to the churn, Nike’s Chief Accounting Officer is set to leave the company effective September 4.
Nike continues to pay a quarterly dividend of $0.41 per share, with the last distribution occurring on October 1, translating to an annual yield of approximately 4.2%.
According to InvestingPro’s valuation framework, NKE’s fair value sits around $56.15, suggesting potential upside of roughly 47%, though most analysts expect near-term volatility before any sustained recovery materializes.
