NIO (NIO) Q2 Earnings Preview: Can Profitability Streak Continue on September 1?
Key Takeaways
- NIO’s Q2 2026 financial results will be released September 1, ahead of US trading hours.
- The Chinese EV maker delivered 107,658 vehicles in Q2, representing 49.4% year-over-year growth but missing guidance of 110,000-115,000 units.
- Wall Street forecasts a 7-cent per share loss on $4.78 billion in revenue, significantly better than the 32-cent loss from the same period last year.
- Market participants are focused on whether the company can sustain non-GAAP profitability for a third consecutive quarter.
- Shares are trading near $4.38, reflecting a 14% decline since the start of the year.
Trading at $4.38, NIO stock faces a crucial moment as the company prepares to unveil Q2 2026 financial results this Tuesday, September 1. The announcement is scheduled for release before US markets open, followed by a management call at 8:00 am ET.
Investors have experienced significant turbulence throughout the year. After touching a low of $3.14 in early 2025, shares rallied dramatically to $6.87 by April when NIO achieved its first quarterly net profit. However, that momentum evaporated after Q1 2026 revealed a return to net losses, triggering another downturn.
Following the Q4 2025 profitability announcement, the stock jumped 20% immediately. Within weeks, gains expanded to 45.6%. The subsequent Q1 2026 loss announcement wiped out those advances quickly.
This history amplifies the importance of Tuesday’s financial disclosure.
Analyst consensus points to a per-share loss of 7 cents alongside $4.78 billion in revenue. These figures would mark an 80% revenue increase compared to the prior year and substantial improvement from the 32-cent per-share loss posted in Q2 2025.
Vehicle deliveries reached 107,658 units in the second quarter, climbing 49.4% year-over-year. This total missed NIO’s internal projection of 110,000 to 115,000 vehicles. April proved challenging with just 29,356 deliveries, though May and June showed recovery at 37,705 and 40,597 units respectively.
Non-GAAP Profit Remains Central Focus
Deutsche Bank indicated in early June that it anticipates continued non-GAAP profitability for Q2, supported by stronger margins on SUV products. The bank projected approximately 180 million yuan in non-GAAP net income.
During Q1 2026, the company posted adjusted operating profit of 66.8 million yuan with an overall gross margin of 19.0%—its strongest margin performance in four years. Revenue jumped 112.2% year-over-year to 25.53 billion yuan.
The EV manufacturer has exceeded earnings per share projections in three of its last four reporting periods, delivering an average positive surprise of 53.3%.
Vehicle margins are projected to compress to 17-18% for Q2, down from 18.8% in the prior quarter. Management previously indicated that escalating costs for memory chips, lithium carbonate, battery components, copper and aluminum would create margin headwinds.
Product Portfolio Performance Analysis
The third-generation ES8 represented 31% of Q2 volume with 33,474 deliveries. The newly launched ES9, introduced May 28, contributed 11,703 units. Firefly recorded 17,589 deliveries, while ONVO achieved 29,124 units, marking 70.5% year-over-year expansion.
Trailing twelve-month revenue has reached $14.3 billion. First-half 2026 deliveries totaled 191,123 vehicles, up 67.4% from the year-ago period.
The company’s infrastructure now includes more than 3,900 battery swap stations and 28,000 charging locations. NIO’s forward price-to-sales multiple of 0.5 trades at a discount to competitors Li Auto and XPeng.
Beyond the quarterly numbers, investors will scrutinize management’s Q3 delivery and revenue projections, plus any commentary regarding full-year profitability objectives.
