Novo Nordisk (NVO) Stock: Oral Wegovy Users Shed 4% Body Weight in OCTANE Study
Key Takeaways
- Individuals transitioning from injection-based weight management medications to Novo Nordisk’s oral Wegovy formulation achieved an average body weight reduction of 4.1% across a three-month period.
- The OCTANE real-world study monitored 194 individuals who transitioned from injectable forms of semaglutide or tirzepatide to the tablet version.
- The percentage of study participants meeting clinical obesity criteria decreased from 87.1% to 65.5% following three months of oral treatment.
- Shares of Novo Nordisk have declined over 70% from peak levels as competitor Eli Lilly has gained market leadership in the obesity pharmaceutical sector.
- Tablet-based obesity medications currently represent approximately one-third of obesity prescriptions in the United States, with Novo commanding more than 80% market share in this category.
Shares of Novo Nordisk (NVO) have plummeted more than 70% from record highs. Fresh clinical evidence unveiled Wednesday may provide the pharmaceutical giant with a much-needed boost.
The Copenhagen-based pharmaceutical manufacturer shared findings from its OCTANE research initiative during a diabetes conference held in Milan. The research examined individuals who transitioned from injection-based obesity medications to the once-daily Wegovy tablet.
Study subjects experienced an average weight reduction of 4.1% throughout the three-month observation period following their transition. This translates to approximately 4 kilograms, or 8.8 pounds, from an initial average weight of 221.6 pounds.
Close to 41% of study subjects achieved weight loss of 5% or greater within the three-month timeframe. The share of participants meeting the medical definition of obesity decreased from 87.1% to 65.5% during this period.
The research analyzed 194 individuals using information gathered from telehealth provider Ro. The majority of study subjects had previously used either Wegovy or Eli Lilly’s Zepbound injections prior to transitioning to the tablet formulation.
The Strategic Importance of Oral Formulation
Novo established its initial position in the obesity treatment market with injectable Wegovy following its 2021 market entry. That competitive advantage proved temporary. Eli Lilly has subsequently surpassed Novo to become the dominant force in this therapeutic category.
The tablet formulation has emerged as a key growth driver for Novo. Oral medications currently represent approximately one-third of obesity prescriptions in the United States, with Novo securing over 80% of newly written oral prescriptions.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Doustdar indicated to Reuters last week that tablet formulations may ultimately comprise half of the worldwide obesity medication market. Industry analysts estimate this market could reach or exceed $100 billion in annual value by decade’s end.
Martin Holst Lange, Novo’s Chief Scientific Officer, directly addressed widespread concerns regarding tablet adherence. He indicated that patient compliance issues haven’t materialized as some industry observers anticipated.
“Obviously, numerous patients actually achieve superior outcomes with the tablet compared to their results on injectable formulations,” Lange stated during a media interview.
Understanding the Study’s Scope and Limitations
Real-world observational studies such as OCTANE function differently than randomized controlled clinical trials. These studies incorporate partially self-reported patient information and cannot establish direct causation with the same certainty as controlled experimental research.
Nevertheless, the findings provide Novo with compelling evidence during a challenging period for the company’s stock performance. Approximately 82% of participants with complete data records reported at least one measurable treatment benefit, ranging from improved clothing fit to enhanced dietary patterns.
Dr. Louis Aronne from Weill Cornell Medicine, who co-authored the study, indicated the results demonstrate a viable treatment alternative for specific patient populations. He emphasized the tablet formulation enabled numerous participants to fall below the medical threshold defining clinical obesity.
The oral Wegovy formulation carries a boxed warning regarding potential thyroid tumors, including malignant forms. The medication is contraindicated for individuals with personal or family medical history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 syndrome.
Frequently reported adverse effects include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort, along with additional reactions.
The tablet version of Wegovy has received market approval and is commercially available in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and United Arab Emirates. Novo announced intentions to introduce the tablet formulation in additional international markets during upcoming quarters.
