Japan's Manufacturing PMI Declines to Six-Month Low Amid Slowing Orders

Japan's manufacturing sector experienced a slowdown in September, with the S&P Global Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) falling to 54.1 from 54.9 in August, marking its lowest level in six months. Despite this decline, the index remains above the neutral 50 mark, indicating continued expansion in the sector. However, the slowdown in new order growth and persistent cost pressures are raising concerns about the sustainability of this expansion, particularly as the sector relies heavily on overseas demand.

Output growth in September was the slowest in three months, with new orders easing from August's multi-year record to the lowest rate since May. Some manufacturers attributed this slowdown to clients adjusting their inventories after previous stockpiling. In contrast, new export orders saw a significant increase, nearing August's eight-and-a-half-year high, driven by strong demand from various Asian economies and the United States. Employment levels also rose, with job creation reaching the second-fastest rate since April 2018, reflecting manufacturers' confidence in future output growth.

Supply chain challenges persisted, with delivery times for inputs lengthening significantly, attributed to shortages of electronic components and AI-related technology. Input cost inflation, while easing to a six-month low, remained rapid, driven by rising prices for labor, raw materials, energy, and transport. Manufacturers continued to raise their selling prices at one of the fastest rates since late 2022, indicating ongoing cost pressures. Despite these challenges, manufacturers expressed optimism about future output, citing expected demand from overseas clients and robust interest in semiconductors and AI-related products.
