Nucor (NUE) Stock Tumbles 5% Following Weak Q3 Earnings Forecast
Quick Summary
- Shares of Nucor declined more than 5% following third-quarter 2026 earnings projections of $5.55-$5.65 per diluted share, missing analyst expectations of $5.99
- Peer Steel Dynamics similarly declined after releasing Q3 projections of $5.34-$5.38 per share, also below consensus forecasts
- Q3 results won’t include two significant Q2 benefits: a $61 million gain from Helion investment revaluation and approximately $130 million in raw material procurement refunds
- Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway trimmed its Nucor holdings throughout the second quarter of 2026
- Wall Street analysts interpret the forecast as cautious, anticipating Q4 improvements from pricing dynamics and strengthening steel market conditions
Nucor stock experienced a sharp decline exceeding 5% on Friday following the Charlotte-headquartered steel producer’s third-quarter 2026 earnings forecast, which came in beneath analyst predictions. Trading reached $255.16 during after-hours activity, retreating from the session peak of $268.08, yet maintaining a substantial cushion above the 52-week floor of $131.32.
Management announced anticipated net earnings between $5.55 and $5.65 per diluted share for the period concluding October 3, 2026. Market analysts had forecast $5.99 per diluted share. This shortfall triggered the selloff despite the projection representing substantial year-over-year growth from the $2.63 recorded in Q3 2025.
Steel Dynamics experienced a parallel downturn, declining 2.1% to $240.21 during pre-market hours. The manufacturer issued Q3 earnings guidance ranging from $5.34 to $5.38 per share, likewise falling short of Wall Street consensus. Cleveland-Cliffs edged down 0.2% to $12.74.
Absence of Non-Recurring Benefits
A significant factor behind investor concern centers on what Q3 results will lack. During the second quarter, Nucor recorded a $61 million non-cash benefit from the enhanced valuation of its stake in fusion energy developer Helion, alongside approximately $130 million in historical raw material procurement credits that reduced operational expenses. These one-time advantages won’t appear in the current quarter.
Nucor’s raw materials division is anticipated to deliver reduced profitability in Q3 resulting from softer pricing conditions and decreased shipment volumes. This headwind persists despite expectations for sequential growth in both the steel mills and steel products divisions.
Steel Dynamics presented a more optimistic outlook for its primary operations. The company forecasts substantially improved steel operations segment profits on a sequential basis, fueled by expanding metal margins, elevated average selling prices, and declining scrap material expenses. Shipment volumes are also projected to climb.
Robust Steel Pricing Environment Continues
Notwithstanding the guidance shortfalls, the overall steel industry remains fundamentally strong. Domestic benchmark steel prices have surged nearly 30% year-to-date to $1,237 per ton as of Thursday’s close, representing a 49% increase over the trailing twelve months. This favorable pricing environment has served as a critical catalyst for both companies’ equity performance.
Through Thursday’s market close, Nucor stock has appreciated 63% year-to-date. Steel Dynamics has recorded gains of 45% during the identical timeframe.
Market analysts predominantly characterized the Q3 projections as prudent rather than concerning. The fourth quarter is positioned to capture benefits from pricing lag effects and strengthening steel demand conditions, potentially enhancing profit margins.
Industry observers highlighted tariff policies and possible price corrections as ongoing risk factors for the sector.
Berkshire Hathaway decreased its NUE holdings during the second quarter of 2026, a transaction that previously generated attention among investors monitoring institutional positioning in steel equities.
At the current price of $255.16, Nucor trades significantly below its 52-week pinnacle of $280.11, though core business fundamentals, especially the favorable steel pricing backdrop, remain sound entering the latter portion of the year.
