Steel Dynamics (STLD) Stock Drops 3.5% on Canadian Tariff Action and Disappointing Q3 Outlook
Key Takeaways
- Steel Dynamics (STLD) shares declined approximately 3.5% following Canada’s announcement of 50% tariffs on American steel and aluminum products
- STLD and rival Nucor (NUE) both released Q3 earnings projections that came in under Wall Street forecasts
- The company’s Q3 earnings per share guidance of $5.34 to $5.38 fell short of analyst predictions
- Despite the decline, JPMorgan upgraded its STLD price target from $260 to $273
- Domestic steel benchmark pricing has surged 30% year-to-date, reaching $1,237 per ton
Shares of Steel Dynamics experienced a sharp decline of approximately 3.5% on Friday, pressured by two significant developments: Canada’s implementation of substantial 50% tariffs on American steel and aluminum imports, coupled with quarterly profit forecasts that underperformed Wall Street’s projections.
During Friday’s premarket session, STLD traded at $240.21, reversing Thursday’s 3% gain. Competitor Nucor (NUE) experienced a steeper decline of approximately 4.6%, while Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) edged down 0.2% to $12.74.
The tariff announcement from Canada sparked immediate worries that Steel Dynamics’ Canadian export business could face significant competitive challenges, potentially eroding profit margins in this crucial North American territory.
Compounding these concerns, Steel Dynamics projected third-quarter earnings per share between $5.34 and $5.38. This forecast registered significantly below what Wall Street analysts had anticipated.
Nucor similarly disappointed, providing adjusted earnings guidance of $5.55 to $5.65 per share, which also trailed market expectations.
Both steel manufacturers have grappled with elevated raw material costs, creating pressure on profitability in the near term.
Wall Street Views Projections as Cautious
However, industry analysts interpreted the subdued guidance differently than the market reaction suggested. The forecasts were generally characterized by Wall Street as overly cautious rather than indicative of fundamental business deterioration.
JPMorgan elevated its price objective on STLD to $273 from a previous $260 target, emphasizing the company’s robust long-term fundamentals despite mounting short-term challenges.
Steel Dynamics indicated it anticipates substantially improved profitability from its steel operations in Q3 versus Q2, driven by expanding metal margins, elevated average selling prices, and reduced scrap expenses. The company also projects higher shipment volumes.
Nucor similarly forecasts sequential earnings improvement across most business units, with the exception of its raw materials division, where pricing has experienced softness.
Industry Pricing Remains Elevated
The overall steel market environment continues to provide support. Domestic benchmark steel pricing has advanced nearly 30% in 2024 to $1,237 per ton as of Thursday’s close. On a 12-month basis, prices have surged 49%.
This robust pricing environment has been a significant driver for both stocks. Through Thursday’s close, STLD has appreciated 45% year-to-date. NUE has posted even stronger gains of 63% during the same timeframe.
Steel Dynamics’ emerging aluminum business unit offers additional long-term diversification potential, although this segment continues to operate at a loss as it scales production capacity.
Market analysts have identified tariff exposure and potential price corrections as ongoing risk factors for the steel sector heading into the fourth quarter.
Steel Dynamics stock maintains a market capitalization of $34.29 billion and has delivered year-to-date returns exceeding 41%.
