Oil Prices Decline Amid Escalating Tensions in the Middle East

Tensions in the Middle East have intensified following recent attacks on Saudi Arabia's east-west oil pipeline system, which were reportedly carried out by drones originating from Iraq. The strikes resulted in fires at pump stations along the pipeline, although the full extent of the damage and the timeline for repairs remain uncertain. In response to the advancing Houthis along Yemen's Red Sea coast, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged U.S. President Donald Trump to authorize military action, but Trump opted to provide intelligence and targeting support instead, as reported by Reuters.

Despite these developments, oil prices have not reacted as expected. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil reached a high of $104.46 before falling to approximately $98.48, hovering around the critical $100 mark. This decline illustrates that bullish news does not always translate into higher prices, as traders may have already priced in the geopolitical risks or are taking profits after the recent highs. The price action suggests that sellers have found resistance at previous highs, leading to a sharp drop in prices.

The recent trading patterns indicate that WTI remains above significant support levels between $97.00 and $97.79, as well as the rising 100-hour moving average at $96.28. These levels will be crucial in determining whether the current decline is merely a correction or the beginning of a more significant downturn. If prices remain above these support areas, buyers may still have the upper hand; however, a break below these levels could shift control to sellers, potentially leading to further declines.
