Oil Prices Rise Nearly 4% Amid Ongoing Hormuz Tensions

Oil prices experienced a significant increase on September 20, 2026, as geopolitical tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continued to dominate market sentiment. Brent crude settled up nearly 4% at approximately $103 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose around 2% to about $92 per barrel. This rebound comes after both benchmarks had reached multi-week lows earlier in the week, highlighting the volatility in the market driven by diplomatic stalemates between the United States and Iran.

The Iranian government is currently reviewing a U.S. response to its proposal aimed at reducing hostilities, with many differences still unresolved. Indirect talks have included discussions about the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iran. An Iranian official indicated that the strait could reopen within a week if the U.S. eases its military pressure, while Iran's security chief maintained that the strait would remain closed until Iran's conditions are met.

In the U.S., crude oil inventories unexpectedly rose by approximately 3 million barrels, contrary to expectations for a drawdown. Meanwhile, gasoline stocks fell by about 1.7 million barrels, and distillate inventories decreased by around 0.4 million barrels. The U.S. crude output remained steady at nearly 13.9 million barrels per day. Additionally, Saudi Arabia has resumed operations on its East-West Pipeline, which had been shut down due to drone attacks, and Iraq reported that its exports exceeded 3 million barrels per day. These developments have added complexity to the oil market, as traders remain cautious amid fluctuating supply signals and ongoing geopolitical risks.
