Oman seeks consultants to expand geothermal project

Oman is seeking consultants to assess and plan an expansion of the hot spring geothermal project in its northern region as it diversifies its renewable energy sources.

The state-owned Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) has invited consultants to bid for phases two and three, after tendering the first phase in April 2025.

Consultants will carry out geological, geochemical and deep geophysical investigations, assess geothermal resources and develop a three-dimensional concept model.

They will also select sites, complete a preliminary techno-economic assessment and prepare a drilling programme.

Bids are due by November 30 2026.

No update has been released on the first phase.

In November 2022 US oilfield services company SLB announced plans to work with the Omani government to develop the country’s geothermal resources.

The sultanate aims to achieve net-zero gas emissions by 2050, generate 30 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and reach 100 percent clean energy capacity by 2050.

Nama PWP’s project pipeline to 2030-31 includes 24 solar and wind projects, as well as a waste-to-energy scheme.
