PayPal (PYPL) Stock Gains as Stripe-Advent Acquisition Discussions Resume
Key Takeaways
- Payment processor Stripe and private equity firm Advent International have restarted acquisition discussions for PayPal
- PayPal turned down an initial proposal of $60.50 per share submitted in July, deeming it inadequate
- Negotiations are currently underway for an improved valuation, with a potential transaction within weeks
- Shares of PYPL climbed approximately 2% Friday after the Wall Street Journal’s disclosure
- The company’s current valuation stands near $53 billion, a dramatic decline from its 2021 high exceeding $280 billion
Payment platform PayPal has entered preliminary acquisition discussions with a consortium featuring digital payments powerhouse Stripe alongside private equity firm Advent International, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The acquisition group initially presented a bid in July, offering $60.50 for each share. PayPal’s leadership rejected the proposal, stating the valuation fell short of expectations. Negotiations have continued between both parties regarding an elevated price point.
Industry sources suggest a transaction could materialize within the next several weeks, although finalization remains uncertain.
Shares of PYPL advanced 1.8% Friday following the news release, ending the session with a valuation approaching $53 billion. The July proposal would have assigned the company a similar $53 billion enterprise value.
Prior to July’s acquisition approach, PayPal shares had languished near multi-year lows, translating to a market capitalization of approximately $40 billion. This represents a dramatic reversal from its 2021 zenith when shares exceeded $300 and the company commanded a valuation surpassing $280 billion.
William Blair analyst commentary characterized the $60.50 proposal as a “lowball offer” while expressing skepticism about the transaction’s strategic rationale.
Turnaround Strategy Under New Leadership
PayPal has faced mounting competitive challenges as its flagship checkout platform surrendered market share to rivals including Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shopify, and installment payment providers such as Affirm.
Share prices have plummeted approximately 80% from pandemic-era peaks. Consecutive earnings guidance reductions, disappointing financial results, and contracting profit margins contributed to the prolonged decline.
Enrique Lores assumed the chief executive position in March 2026, succeeding Alex Chriss following a profit forecast downgrade. Board members had expressed dissatisfaction with insufficient progress on corporate revitalization efforts.
Lores, previously serving as HP’s chief executive, reorganized PayPal into three distinct operating divisions and pledged accelerated implementation of artificial intelligence technologies.
During the company’s latest quarterly earnings presentation, PayPal highlighted positive momentum across Venmo, Braintree, its branded debit card offering, and buy now, pay later solutions as encouraging indicators.
Lores emphasized during that announcement that PayPal remains committed to its transformation plan while remaining open to “evaluate all opportunities to maximize shareholder value.”
Profile of Prospective Acquirers
Stripe operates as a privately-held payments infrastructure company established by Irish entrepreneurs Patrick and John Collison. The firm achieved a $159 billion valuation earlier this year, with prominent venture capital firm Sequoia Capital among its investors.
Advent International represents a Boston-headquartered private equity investment firm overseeing assets exceeding $90 billion, concentrating on financial services, technology infrastructure, healthcare, and consumer-facing industries.
PayPal has drawn acquisition interest from numerous major technology corporations and private equity firms throughout the past year, attracted by its substantial customer base and valuable transaction data. Previous exploratory discussions failed to produce definitive agreements.
Current Wall Street consensus rates PYPL as a Hold, reflecting four Buy recommendations, 21 Hold ratings, and two Sell opinions issued during the previous three months. The consensus price target of $58.36 suggests potential downside of approximately 5% from present trading levels.
