People’s Bank of China Expected to Set USD/CNY Reference Rate at 6.6977

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) is anticipated to announce its daily USD/CNY reference rate at 6.6977, a figure that has garnered significant attention in Asian currency markets. The PBOC publishes this rate around 0115 GMT, which has become increasingly important as the Chinese government shifts its approach to the yuan, moving from a strategy of limiting its rise to one of gradual appreciation.

Under China's managed float system, the onshore yuan is allowed to trade within a 2% band around the midpoint set by the PBOC each morning. This midpoint is determined by various factors, including the previous day's closing price, fluctuations in the US dollar and other major currencies, and broader global foreign exchange conditions. The PBOC's fixing serves not only as a reference point for trading but also as a tool for influencing market expectations regarding the yuan's value.

In recent weeks, the PBOC has adjusted the fixing upward for eight consecutive sessions, marking its longest streak of increases since 2023. This adjustment has pushed the midpoint to its strongest level since February 2023, with the onshore yuan reaching values last seen in January 2023. Despite this, the fixing has consistently been set below market estimates, indicating a cautious approach by Beijing as it balances the benefits of a stronger yuan against potential impacts on exporters amid a soft domestic economy.
