Preliminary PMI Data for Eurozone to Influence ECB Rate Decisions

Preliminary Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data for September is set to be released for France, Germany, and the overall Eurozone, with market expectations indicating slight declines in manufacturing and services sectors. Analysts predict France's Manufacturing PMI will drop to 50.9 from 51.1, Germany's will decrease to 54.0 from 54.3, and the Eurozone's will fall to 52.6 from 52.7. In the services sector, France is expected to see a slight increase to 48.3 from 48.0, while Germany's services PMI is projected to hold steady at 50.0, and the Eurozone's to decrease to 51.5 from 51.6.

The upcoming PMI figures are crucial as they may provide insights into the European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy direction. Currently, markets are pricing in a 45% probability of a 25 basis points rate hike in October, with further increases anticipated only by December. The focus will be on inflation details within the PMI reports, particularly input and output prices, as these will indicate whether rising energy costs are affecting broader business expenses and consumer pricing.

The services sector's performance will also be closely monitored, as persistent price pressures could signal domestically generated inflation. The ECB has emphasized the importance of evaluating the overall economic landscape rather than reacting solely to energy price fluctuations. A modest improvement in PMI figures may not significantly alter the ECB's outlook, but a combination of stronger economic activity and increased inflation pressures could lead to a more aggressive policy stance in the near future.
