RBA Deputy Governor Hauser Emphasizes Need for Continued Monetary Policy Action to Combat Inflation

Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser has stated that inflation remains excessively high and that monetary policy must continue to reduce demand within the economy to bring inflation back toward the target range. He warned that if inflation does not decrease, further interest rate hikes may be necessary.

Hauser characterized the current economic situation as a slowdown rather than a recession, although he acknowledged ongoing risks that could drive inflation higher. He noted that the RBA's earlier rate hikes, which raised the cash rate to 4.35 percent, were a response to demand exceeding the economy's supply capacity more than anticipated.

Currently, headline inflation stands at approximately 3.8 percent, above the RBA's target of 2-3 percent. The Board has maintained steady rates over the last two meetings, but Hauser's comments indicate that the potential for future rate increases remains, especially in light of external inflation pressures such as rising oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions.
