RBA Holds Cash Rate Steady Amid Inflation Concerns

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has decided to maintain the cash rate target at 4.35% during its meeting on August 10-11, 2026. The board unanimously agreed to hold rates, citing that current financial conditions are already somewhat restrictive following three rate increases earlier in the year. The minutes from the meeting indicate that the decision was not a formality, as members engaged in a serious discussion about the potential for a pre-emptive 25 basis point hike, considering various inflationary risks.

The RBA highlighted several factors that could push inflation higher than anticipated, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which could lead to increased oil prices, and a significant rise in investment related to artificial intelligence and data centers. Despite these risks, the board opted to wait for more data before making any further adjustments, noting that the economy was progressing towards its inflation and employment targets. Underlying trimmed mean inflation rose to 3.6% in the June quarter, slightly below expectations, while headline inflation was impacted by lower fuel and travel prices.

The board also assessed the labor market, projecting a gradual rise in the unemployment rate to 4.8% by the end of 2028. Although labor conditions have eased slightly, they remain tight. The RBA acknowledged that financial stability considerations were not constraining monetary policy, and it supported the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority's decision to keep macroprudential settings unchanged. The Australian dollar has depreciated by approximately 1% on a trade-weighted basis since May, reflecting narrowing yield differentials and lower commodity prices, but remains about 5% higher than at the start of the year. The next RBA meeting is scheduled for late September, where further data on inflation and the labor market will be evaluated.
