RBA Official Highlights Rising Neutral Rates Amid Economic Uncertainty

Christopher Kent, Assistant Governor of Financial Markets at the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), stated that there is reasonable evidence indicating that neutral interest rates are rising both in Australia and internationally. This observation raises questions about the effectiveness of current monetary policy, particularly the cash rate, which stands at 4.60% following four increases this year. Kent expressed confidence that the policy is somewhat restrictive but suggested it may not be restrictive enough to combat persistent inflation.

During a discussion at the Commonwealth Bank’s Global Markets Conference in Sydney, Kent noted that while household demand is softening, business credit remains robust. He acknowledged recent tax changes affecting housing as beneficial for monetary policy, indicating a collaborative effect between fiscal settings and housing demand. However, he remained cautious regarding the labor market, highlighting a recent drop in employment figures and an increase in the unemployment rate to 4.7%, the highest level in five years.

Kent's remarks come ahead of the upcoming quarterly inflation data set to be released on 28 October, which will be critical for the RBA's decision-making process. A strong inflation report could lead to renewed expectations for a rate hike in November, while a weaker report may solidify a pause in rate increases. The market's reaction to recent employment data, which saw the Australian dollar and short-term interest rates decline, reflects traders adjusting their expectations for near-term monetary policy.
