Rigetti (RGTI) Stock Surges 6% Following $100M Federal Quantum Computing Award
Key Highlights
- Rigetti Computing landed a $100M agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce through the CHIPS Act
- The investment will finance three superconducting quantum computing research and development initiatives
- RGTI shares climbed nearly 6% during premarket hours and closed up 5.66% at $16.06
- The federal government will obtain a minority, non-controlling ownership position in Rigetti
- Wall Street analysts maintain Buy recommendations with a consensus price target of $32.60
Rigetti Computing announced a $100 million funding arrangement with the U.S. Department of Commerce on Tuesday, propelling RGTI shares up nearly 6% during premarket sessions to reach $16.06.
The funding comes through the CHIPS Research and Development Office, established under the CHIPS Act. The capital will finance three targeted research and development initiatives focused on superconducting quantum computing technology.
The three initiatives include: miniaturizing readout electronics into a compact configuration, enhancing cryogenic infrastructure through innovative cryostat design, and building fabrication processes for high-connectivity quantum chip architectures.
Chief Executive Officer Subodh Kulkarni stated the investment will accelerate Rigetti’s progress toward utility-scale quantum computing systems. “Addressing critical scaling obstacles provides us with the chance to revolutionize the sector,” he stated.
Under the agreement’s terms, the U.S. Department of Commerce will acquire a minority, non-controlling equity position in Rigetti.
The capital injection aims to reduce both the timeline and expenses associated with constructing large-scale quantum computing systems. Rigetti believes this will facilitate wider market adoption and bolster the nation’s quantum computing infrastructure.
Chart Indicators Signal Weakness
Despite today’s rally, RGTI’s technical indicators remain fragile. Trading at $16.03, the stock was positioned 4.6% beneath its 20-day simple moving average and 2.4% under its 50-day SMA.
Additionally, shares traded 12.4% below the 100-day SMA and 16.9% under the 200-day SMA. The MACD indicator continues trading beneath its signal line, suggesting subdued momentum.
Market participants are monitoring $16.50 as immediate resistance and $15.50 as a key support threshold.
Wall Street Maintains Optimistic Outlook
Analyst sentiment toward RGTI remains positive. Six analysts hold a consensus price objective of $32.60, representing approximately 100% upside from current levels.
Rosenblatt has reaffirmed its Buy recommendation and $40 price objective twice in 2025, with the latest affirmation on August 7. Wedbush similarly maintained an Outperform stance with a $40 target on August 3.
RGTI represents a significant allocation in multiple quantum computing exchange-traded funds, including a 7.52% position in the Corgi Quantum Computing 2x Daily ETF (XQTM) and 5.33% in the WisdomTree Quantum Computing Fund (WQTM).
These substantial holdings mean capital flows into or out of these ETFs can materially influence RGTI’s stock price.
Rigetti’s fully owned entity, Rigetti & Co, LLC, will implement the three financed initiatives. The organization states the research is specifically designed to advance its development timeline toward commercially scalable quantum computing platforms.
Kulkarni emphasized that lowering both expenses and construction timeframes for quantum systems at scale will enable broader accessibility for scientific researchers throughout the United States.
This CHIPS Act award represents one of the most substantial federal commitments to a dedicated quantum computing enterprise in recent history.
