Shein IPO Launch Faces Turbulence as Pre-Market Trading Shows Double-Digit Decline
Key Takeaways
- Pre-market activity shows Shein shares declining over 10% before the official Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing
- The fast-fashion company secured $1.7 billion through its offering, pricing shares at HK$48.56 and achieving a $26.5 billion valuation
- The current market cap represents a dramatic 75% reduction from Shein’s 2022 private valuation of nearly $100 billion
- Mounting tariff pressures, intensifying rivalry with Temu, and decelerating expansion are dampening market enthusiasm
- The retailer reported a $99 million quarterly deficit in Q1 2026, a sharp reversal from the $395 million profit recorded in the prior year
The much-anticipated public offering of Shein in Hong Kong has encountered early turbulence. The fast-fashion company’s stock price dropped over 10% during gray-market activity on Monday, just 24 hours ahead of its scheduled debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Through its initial public offering, Shein secured $1.7 billion in capital by setting the share price at HK$48.56. This pricing establishes a total market capitalization of approximately $26.5 billion. Final confirmation of the pricing structure was anticipated later that Monday.
Gray-market activity refers to pre-listing share price quotations provided by brokerages before formal exchange trading commences. Data from Futu Securities, Hong Kong’s leading retail brokerage by trading volume, indicated Shein shares were changing hands at approximately HK$42.
Dramatic Decline From Previous Highs
The present valuation of Shein marks a significant decline from its previous position. Back in 2022, private market investors valued the company at close to $100 billion. The current figure represents barely more than one-quarter of that former peak.
According to Bevis Ho, a senior analyst with Futu Securities, market participants are exercising considerable caution. He observed that current investment trends favor artificial intelligence and robotics sectors over the fast-fashion industry.
Recent tariff modifications in both the United States and European markets have significantly impacted Shein’s operational strategy. The company’s business framework depends on direct-to-consumer shipments of budget-friendly merchandise, and regulatory shifts across these major markets have increased both complexity and costs.
Decelerating Revenue Growth and Recent Red Ink
Shein’s financial performance paints a challenging picture. The company generated $41.8 billion in total revenue for fiscal 2025. However, net profit experienced a 39% contraction to $2.06 billion.
During the opening quarter of 2026, the company recorded a $99 million net loss. This represents a significant shift from the $395 million profit achieved during the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
Forward-looking projections suggest revenue growth of merely 3.4% to reach $44.3 billion in the coming year. Bloomberg Intelligence forecasts net income of $1.7 billion for 2026.
Based on the IPO pricing, Shein’s valuation exceeds 15 times projected earnings. This compares with approximately 7.4 times for PDD Holdings, which operates competing platform Temu, and 10.7 times for Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index.
Temu has been expanding its market presence across critical territories such as the United States and Europe, intensifying competitive pressure on Shein in regions where it previously dominated.
For multiple years, Shein pursued a public listing, encountering various regulatory obstacles in the United States before redirecting its efforts toward a Hong Kong exchange listing. The disappointing performance in gray-market trading indicates potential challenges lie ahead.
The company’s first quarter 2026 loss of $99 million serves as the latest indicator that the business faces substantial financial headwinds as it transitions into its new status as a publicly traded entity.
