SoftBank Accelerates $25.9B Bridge Loan Repayment for OpenAI Investment
Key Highlights
- SoftBank Group plans to settle $25.9 billion from its $40 billion bridge facility by September 15, 2026
- The facility represents SoftBank’s largest US dollar-denominated borrowing to date
- The company is considering a junk-bond offering between $10 billion and $20 billion for refinancing purposes
- Proceeds from the original loan supported SoftBank’s significant position in OpenAI, which has Microsoft backing
- An additional $30 billion commitment to OpenAI through SoftBank Vision Fund 2 remains in the pipeline
SoftBank Group has confirmed plans to settle $25.9 billion from its massive $40 billion bridge facility by September 15, 2026. The facility was arranged earlier this year to support the company’s OpenAI investment.
SOFTBANK TO REPAY $25.9B REMAINING ON $40B OPENAI BRIDGE LOAN
SoftBank plans to repay the outstanding balance on Sept. 15, months ahead of its March 2027 maturity, as it shifts the financing behind its OpenAI investment toward longer-term debt.

The $40 billion credit line represented the largest US dollar borrowing in SoftBank’s corporate history. The company drew down $30 billion from the total available amount and is now working to convert this temporary financing into more permanent debt instruments.
The facility was unsecured and carried an initial maturity date of March 2027. According to SoftBank, the capital was deployed to finance its OpenAI holdings and related expenditures.
Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s founder, has positioned artificial intelligence investment as the cornerstone of the company’s strategic direction. The OpenAI transaction underscores his ambition to establish SoftBank as a leading force in the worldwide AI sector.
Debt Restructuring Strategy
According to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Kirk Boodry, SoftBank has proactively worked to address the loan’s upcoming maturity. He observed that transitioning to bond financing would extend repayment timelines by multiple years, alleviating near-term financial strain.
SoftBank has scheduled investor presentations in New York for next week to assess appetite for a proposed US dollar high-yield bond offering. The contemplated issuance ranges from $10 billion to $20 billion and could feature a euro-denominated component.
Throughout 2026, the company has already mobilized approximately $25 billion via international and Japanese bond markets, plus a margin loan facility. SoftBank is concurrently pursuing an additional $10 billion credit facility.
The company recently obtained a $10 billion margin loan collateralized by its OpenAI equity position. These initiatives collectively represent SoftBank’s comprehensive approach to converting short-term obligations into durable, extended-maturity financing.
During an August statement, SoftBank Chief Financial Officer Yoshimitsu Goto indicated the company’s intention to begin early refinancing of the bridge facility. He outlined several refinancing mechanisms under consideration, including syndicated credit facilities, capital markets issuances, secured lending, and potential divestments.
Microsoft’s Strategic Position
Microsoft serves as a key strategic partner supporting the OpenAI venture. The technology giant currently trades near $493.95 with an approximate market valuation of $3.67 trillion.
Microsoft’s operations span three core divisions: Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing.
The accelerated settlement of the bridge facility also facilitates SoftBank’s contemplated $30 billion subsequent investment in OpenAI via SoftBank Vision Fund 2.
SoftBank has yet to finalize the precise architecture of its forthcoming bond transaction. The New York investor meetings scheduled for next week should clarify the offering’s magnitude and commercial terms.
The September 15 repayment represents a significant milestone in SoftBank’s broader initiative to establish durable financing for its artificial intelligence investment portfolio.
