SpaceX (SPCX) Stock: Targeted Wireless Strategy Emerges as Analysts Raise Targets
Key Takeaways
- Wells Fargo’s Steven Cahall believes SpaceX will pursue roughly 2% of the wireless market rather than challenging major carriers directly
- Pivotal Research raised SPCX to Strong Buy with a $220 target; analyst consensus reflects Moderate Buy with a mean price objective of $221.06
- Second-quarter revenue reached $7.81 billion, representing 92% growth year-over-year, while EPS of -$0.09 surpassed projections of -$0.26
- Virginia Retirement Systems acquired 50,000 shares valued at approximately $8.54 million during Q2; several other institutional investors launched new stakes
- Approximately 319 million shares will unlock on September 9, prompting observers to monitor potential downward pressure
SpaceX (SPCX) stock hovered near $153.06 during Wednesday’s early trading hours, slipping roughly 0.27% as market conditions remained cautious. The shares trade significantly below their 52-week peak of $225.64 yet maintain a cushion above the 52-week floor of $104.83. Market capitalization stands at approximately $2.01 trillion.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp., SPCX
Investors have closely tracked SpaceX’s emerging wireless initiatives. Wells Fargo senior analyst Steven Cahall outlined on Tuesday via CNBC that SpaceX has no intention of becoming a full-scale fourth national telecom player. The financial logic behind such a move doesn’t pencil out. Rather, he views the wireless effort as one component of a larger technological blueprint.
According to Cahall, the firm may blend its satellite network and spectrum assets with ground-based infrastructure, potentially incorporating cellular towers and a Wi-Fi offload partnership with cable operators. This configuration could create limited expansion avenues for cable and tower businesses while simultaneously intensifying competition for established telecom giants.
“Telcos just facing another competitor, a three-player market going to a much smaller fourth player, that’s still a net negative, for sure,” Cahall said.
Cahall doesn’t foresee SpaceX overtaking T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon in the immediate future. His projection suggests the company may initially focus on capturing approximately 2% of the American population. Such a focused strategy would demand less spectrum allocation, reduced tower deployment, and only a portion of the coverage footprint required by conventional nationwide networks.
Wall Street Perspectives
Pivotal Research elevated SPCX to Strong Buy on Tuesday, setting a $220 price objective. The firm’s investment case centers largely on SpaceX achieving scale with its reusable Starship platform, which would boost launch frequency and accelerate Starlink expansion.
Wells Fargo kept its Overweight stance while reducing its price objective from $215 down to $212. Oppenheimer lifted its target to $280 on September 2, maintaining an Outperform designation. Across 47 analysts, the stock carries a Moderate Buy consensus rating with an average price target of $221.06. Individual forecasts span from $115 to $800.
Bearish voices remain present. DZ Bank launched coverage with a Sell rating alongside a $100 price objective. UBS slashed its target dramatically to $75. Seaport Research Partners moved the stock from Buy to Neutral in August.
Institutional Activity
Virginia Retirement Systems accumulated 50,000 shares valued at roughly $8.54 million during the second quarter. Hyperion Asset Management established a stake worth about $201 million. Wedbush Securities entered with a position near $5 million.
Regarding financial performance, SpaceX delivered Q2 revenue totaling $7.81 billion, marking 91.9% growth versus the prior year. Earnings per share registered at -$0.09, outperforming the analyst consensus estimate of -$0.26 by $0.17. Current projections place full-year EPS at -$0.15.
JPMorgan projects a possible Nasdaq-100 rebalancing could trigger approximately $15.5 billion in passive inflows for SPCX. Meanwhile, around 319 million additional shares become eligible for trading on September 9, representing the third unlock milestone that market participants are monitoring with interest.
