Target (TGT) Stock Slides Despite Earnings That Nearly Doubled Wall Street Expectations
Key Highlights
- The retailer upgraded its annual sales growth projection to approximately 5%, an increase from the 4% forecast provided in May
- Second quarter adjusted earnings per share reached $4.11, significantly surpassing Wall Street’s $2.34 projection
- Second quarter revenue totaled $26.54 billion, exceeding analyst consensus of $26.13 billion
- The hardlines segment (including toys and electronics) posted the strongest performance, climbing over 10% compared to last year
- Despite robust quarterly performance, TGT shares declined approximately 2% in early trading
Target delivered impressive fiscal second quarter results on Wednesday, surpassing expectations on both revenue and earnings fronts. Revenue climbed 5.3% to reach $26.54 billion, outpacing the $26.13 billion consensus forecast. The company’s adjusted earnings per share of $4.11 substantially exceeded analyst expectations of $2.34.
Despite these strong results, shares declined roughly 2% during premarket hours. This reaction illustrates the sometimes unpredictable nature of market responses to earnings reports.
The Minneapolis-based retailer upgraded its annual sales guidance for the second consecutive time in 2026. Management now anticipates approximately 5% revenue growth for the full year, an improvement from the 4% estimate given in May and considerably higher than the 2% target set at the beginning of the fiscal year. The company also elevated its full-year earnings per share guidance to a band of $9.90 to $10.90, compared with the previous range of $7.50 to $8.50.
The updated EPS guidance incorporates a $1.65 per share boost from tariff reimbursements the company received during the second quarter. Even after adjusting for this one-time benefit, the midpoint of the earnings forecast remains $0.75 above the previous guidance midpoint.
Performance Breakdown
The hardlines division, encompassing toys and electronics, emerged as the quarter’s top performer with growth exceeding 10% year-over-year. Target’s six primary merchandising categories all recorded positive sales growth, although apparel and home goods saw minimal expansion, each advancing only marginally.
Comparable store sales increased 3.8%, surpassing projections. The company implemented price reductions on over 10,000 products, with significant discounts concentrated in back-to-school merchandise. The average customer transaction value edged up 0.2%, falling short of the anticipated 0.9% increase.
The company’s gross margin expanded to 33.7%, a notable improvement from 29% recorded in the first quarter. Much of this margin enhancement stemmed from the $1 billion tariff reimbursement.
Chief Executive Officer Michael Fiddelke, who assumed leadership in February, highlighted that shoppers have demonstrated a “strong response” to updated merchandise assortments and pricing strategies. He emphasized that “a lot more to come” remains in the pipeline and stressed the importance of continued “execute well” performance.
Stock Performance and Analyst Views
Year-to-date in 2026, TGT has jumped more than 51%, despite Wednesday’s premarket decline. This impressive rally reflects confidence following the stronger-than-anticipated first quarter results and growing optimism surrounding Fiddelke’s strategic transformation, which emphasizes expanding health, wellness, and baby care offerings to appeal to younger family demographics.
Wall Street analyst sentiment remains measured. Among the 42 analysts tracking the stock, only 12 maintain Buy recommendations or their equivalent. The consensus price target hovers slightly beneath the current trading level.
Research analysts at Vital Knowledge characterized the results as “a solid beat-and-raise report even excluding the large benefit from tariff refunds” and observed that “management initiatives are bearing fruit.” They suggested that heightened investor expectations heading into the announcement may account for the muted market reaction.
Shares of Target were changing hands at $150.11, down $rac;2.37 during premarket trading Wednesday.
