Tech Stocks Tumble Amid Canada Tariff Threats and Nvidia (NVDA) Earnings Looming
Key Highlights
- Monday’s trading saw the S&P 500 decline 0.3% while the Nasdaq tumbled 0.8%, though the Dow managed a 0.3% gain
- Escalating US tariffs on Canadian imports caused trade negotiations to collapse, prompting retaliatory threats
- President Trump announced plans for 50% tariffs targeting Canadian automotive products and steel effective January 2027
- Chip sector weakness intensified as investors positioned ahead of Nvidia’s Wednesday earnings announcement
- Fresh economic sanctions targeting Iran are set to be unveiled Monday by US officials
Wall Street experienced broad declines Monday as market participants navigated escalating trade friction, impending sanctions on Iran, and anticipation of critical technology sector earnings reports.
The S&P 500 registered a 0.3% decline while the Nasdaq Composite slumped 0.8%. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average bucked the trend with a modest 0.3% advance.

Canada-US Trade Relations Deteriorate
Bilateral trade discussions between Washington and Ottawa collapsed following the weekend after new American tariffs were imposed on Canadian exports. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney halted negotiations and vowed to implement reciprocal tariffs.
President Trump subsequently announced intentions to impose 50% levies on Canadian automotive goods, auto components, and steel products, with implementation scheduled for January 1, 2027. General Motors and Ford shares declined following the announcement.
The automotive tariff announcement compounded existing market anxiety. Traders were already positioning defensively ahead of a week crowded with significant economic and corporate events.
Technology and semiconductor equities bore the heaviest losses Monday. SanDisk and Micron shares retreated following reports indicating Apple is conducting trials of processors manufactured by Chinese firm CXMT.
Alibaba’s disclosure of a $10.2 billion equity offering intended to finance its artificial intelligence expansion further weighed on semiconductor stocks.
New Iran Sanctions Loom Over Markets
Washington is finalizing a comprehensive package of economic sanctions directed at Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to provide additional details Monday afternoon.
In a Financial Times editorial, Bessent characterized the forthcoming measures as the most extensive financial campaign ever directed against a hostile nation. Investors awaited concrete information.
Treasury yields retreated, with the 10-year note falling to 4.72% and the 30-year bond declining to 5.24%.
Nvidia Earnings Take Center Stage
Market attention is firmly focused on Nvidia, scheduled to deliver quarterly results Wednesday. The chipmaker has emerged as the quintessential AI investment, with its performance expected to influence broader market sentiment.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF extended losses Monday. Despite entering a fresh bull market phase earlier this month, the benchmark has faced renewed selling pressure in recent sessions.
According to Chris Larkin, managing director at E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley, Nvidia along with other technology earnings releases are “positioned to be a major weight on the market’s momentum scale.”
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is slated to deliver remarks Friday at the Jackson Hole economic symposium. Fixed income traders will scrutinize his commentary for indications regarding monetary policy direction.
The convergence of tariff developments, Iran sanctions rollout, and the Nvidia earnings release creates one of the most event-dense weeks of the year for financial market participants.
