Thursday’s Market Highlights: Micron (MU), Alphabet (GOOGL), Constellation Energy (CEG), and Vicor (VICR) Drive Trading Activity
Quick Summary
- Micron delivered impressive fiscal Q4 results, yet shares dipped 0.4% amid questions about sustained AI chip demand.
- Google’s parent company Alphabet introduced Gemini 4 Argon, an advanced AI model, pushing shares upward.
- A $3 billion nuclear expansion agreement between Constellation Energy and Amazon boosted the energy firm’s stock.
- Vicor shares soared following an upgraded third-quarter outlook driven by licensing revenue.
- Corteva experienced a significant price adjustment after announcing the spinoff of its Crop Protection division into Vylor.
Thursday brought mixed signals to stock futures as trading kicked off the year’s fourth quarter. Meanwhile, bond yields continued their upward trajectory after recording their steepest quarterly rise in nearly three decades.
Despite reporting robust fiscal fourth-quarter results, Micron saw its shares decline 0.4%. The semiconductor manufacturer’s performance historically fluctuates through cyclical patterns. Market participants remain cautious about the sustainability of AI-driven demand for memory chips.
Google Launches Gemini 4 Argon AI System
On Wednesday, Alphabet’s Google division revealed Gemini 4 Argon, its latest artificial intelligence platform. Initial access will be limited to select cybersecurity organizations and government entities.
Broader availability for developers, enterprise clients, and general users will follow once additional safety protocols are completed. According to Google’s testing, Argon outperformed rival models from both OpenAI and Anthropic across 13 out of 19 evaluation metrics.
In one assessment focusing on extended software engineering challenges, Argon achieved a 77.9% success rate. The pricing structure includes $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Following this announcement, Alphabet’s stock climbed 2.2%.
Paramount Skydance experienced a 1.2% decline Thursday, while Warner Bros. Discovery remained unchanged. Both entertainment giants confirmed late Wednesday their expectation to finalize an $81 billion combination by October 6, subject to customary requirements.
Amazon Partners With Constellation Energy on Nuclear Project
Constellation Energy’s shares advanced 3.7% following the announcement of a partnership with Amazon. The agreement establishes a $3 billion, two-decade commitment to enhance a Maryland nuclear facility.
This expansion project will deliver approximately 190 megawatts of additional generating capacity. Growing electricity requirements from data centers and artificial intelligence operations have prompted energy providers to negotiate extended supply contracts throughout this year.
Vicor experienced a 12% stock price surge after upgrading its financial projections. The power module manufacturer now anticipates third-quarter sequential revenue growth of 20%, doubling its previous 10% estimate.
The company attributed this improvement to royalty income from a recently disclosed licensing arrangement. An independent analysis from Seeking Alpha suggested even stronger performance exceeding 30% growth, linked to royalties from Vicor’s inaugural non-exclusive license for its vertical power delivery innovation.
Madison Square Garden Sports saw modest gains after its board greenlit a strategy to separate the New York Rangers franchise from the New York Knicks organization. The transaction is scheduled to complete on October 26.
Thursday’s earnings calendar features several prominent corporations, including Accenture, Acuity, McCormick, and Nike.
In other developments, Inogen’s stock jumped 8% after reaching an agreement to divest its domestic oxygen rental operations to Rotech Healthcare. The transaction values the business at up to $25 million with an anticipated closing in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Additionally, Inogen established a long-term supply partnership with Rotech. The firm also expanded its stock repurchase program by $15 million, elevating the total authorization to $45 million.
Corteva shares declined 64% following confirmation of its plan to spin off the Crop Protection segment into Vylor, a standalone publicly traded entity. Current Corteva stockholders will receive Vylor shares while maintaining their original holdings.
This substantial price decrease represents a technical adjustment associated with the distribution rather than fundamental weakness. The separation becomes official on October 1.
