U.S. Electricity Consumption Expected to Reach Record Levels Due to AI and Crypto Demand
Electricity consumption in the United States is anticipated to reach unprecedented levels in 2026 and 2027, largely fueled by increasing demand from artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency data centers. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts that power demand will rise from 4,195 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2025 to 4,356 billion kWh by 2027.
The shift in energy generation sources is also notable, with renewable energy expected to account for 27% of total generation by 2027. In contrast, coal's share is projected to decrease to 15%. This transition reflects broader trends in energy consumption and generation as the country adapts to new technological demands.
