U.S. Home Sellers Outnumber Buyers by Record 63%
In September 2026, the number of home sellers in the United States surpassed buyers by a record 63%, according to data from Redfin. There were approximately 1.51 million sellers compared to just 929,000 buyers, marking the widest gap since record-keeping began in 2013.
The decline in homebuyer demand has been attributed to high mortgage rates and ongoing affordability challenges, which have significantly impacted the housing market. As a result, 41 of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. are now classified as buyer's markets, with Miami, Nashville, and Houston leading this trend.
