US Consumer Price Index Release Anticipated Amid Mixed Dollar Trading and Rising Oil Prices

The release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) is set for 8:30 AM ET today, with expectations of a rise in headline inflation driven by increasing energy prices. Analysts predict a month-over-month increase of 0.6% for September's headline CPI, up from 0.4% in August, while the year-over-year figure is expected to rise to 3.6% from 3.4%. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is anticipated to show a more modest increase of 0.2% month-over-month, compared to 0.3% in August, with the year-over-year rate expected to reach 2.5%.

Ahead of the CPI release, the US dollar is experiencing mixed trading, with the Australian dollar showing notable strength against it. Treasury yields have decreased slightly, with the 2-year yield at 4.7784% and the 10-year yield at 5.2022%. Futures for the Dow and S&P 500 are indicating a positive opening, while Nasdaq 100 futures are down, reflecting a split in market sentiment as investors await inflation data.

In the commodities market, crude oil prices have risen to $95.91 per barrel, reflecting ongoing concerns about supply disruptions, particularly related to geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. This increase in oil prices is likely to contribute to the headline inflation figures. Meanwhile, gold and silver prices have retreated, with gold trading at $4,138.74 and silver at $58.43. The upcoming CPI report is expected to provide further insights into inflation trends and could influence Federal Reserve policy decisions.
