U.S. Dollar Strengthens Amid Partial Holiday Trading

The U.S. dollar has gained against all seven major currencies at the start of the North American trading week, which is marked by partial holidays in the United States and Canada. Columbus Day is observed in the U.S., while Canada celebrates Thanksgiving. Although U.S. stock markets remain open, the cash Treasury market is closed, leading to lighter trading participation across several markets. The dollar's most significant gains were against the Swiss franc, New Zealand dollar, and euro, while the British pound showed minimal change against the greenback.

Stock futures in the U.S. are mixed, with modest gains in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500, contrasting with a decline in the Nasdaq 100. The Dow is up by 56 points, and the S&P 500 has increased by 2.21 points, while the Nasdaq 100 has dropped by 96 points. The U.S. cash bond market remains closed, and the last recorded Treasury yields from Friday indicate a 10-year yield at 5.365%, the highest since 2002, which influences borrowing costs and reflects expectations for growth and inflation.

In commodities, crude oil prices have rebounded, trading at $93.04 per barrel, up 1.30%. Meanwhile, precious metals such as gold and silver have seen declines, with gold priced at $4,171.43, down 0.55%. The geopolitical landscape remains tense, with reports of attacks in Saudi Arabia and ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, which could impact energy markets. The People's Bank of China has also set a stronger yuan reference rate, marking the strongest level since February 2023, providing a notable exception to the dollar's overall strength.
