Broadcom CEO Warns of AI Investment Risks Amid Revenue Growth Forecasts

Hock Tan, the CEO of Broadcom, expressed concerns regarding the understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) investments among many investors, comparing the current boom to casino gambling. Speaking at an event in Singapore, Tan noted that investors have set unrealistic expectations and may not fully grasp the value of what they are investing in. He likened companies experimenting with AI to children quickly spending arcade tokens without gaining meaningful insights, raising questions about the long-term profitability of AI ventures, including those of OpenAI, which reported annualized revenue of approximately $50 billion.

Despite these warnings, Broadcom has significantly benefited from the AI surge, with its AI semiconductor revenue tripling to around $17 billion in the fiscal third quarter. The company anticipates this figure will rise to about $22 billion in the fourth quarter. Tan forecasts that annual AI chip revenue could increase fourfold from approximately $58 billion this fiscal year to $230 billion by fiscal 2028, with key customers including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Tan cautioned that access to financing might soon become a more pressing constraint for the industry than shortages of memory chips. Recently, banks began syndicating a $60 billion financing package linked to Anthropic's lease of Google-designed chips, which includes $42 billion in loans backed by Broadcom's credit rating. While such financial arrangements can facilitate chip demand conversion into sales, they also introduce additional risks for Broadcom if its customers face challenges in meeting their financial obligations. This situation highlights the ongoing debate about whether companies can generate sufficient returns to sustain their AI investments.
