Oil Prices Rise Amid Geopolitical Tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East

Oil prices increased on Monday as tensions escalated in both the Middle East and Ukraine, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude benchmarks rising before slightly retreating at the end of the trading session. The geopolitical landscape has become more complex following a recent US-Russia energy deal announced by President Donald Trump, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed was followed by renewed Russian attacks on Ukraine, violating an energy ceasefire.

Zelensky warned that Ukraine would respond during the winter if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire, as power outages were reported in eastern Ukraine due to Russian strikes. Meanwhile, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding diesel supply arrangements, suggesting that Russia could increase diesel exports to global markets by the end of the year.

In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister pledged a serious response to Houthi attacks on the kingdom's oil and gas facilities. Trump stated he would decide on US involvement in potential strikes against the Houthis. Concerns over supply disruptions were compounded by warnings from Saudi Aramco's CEO about the tightness of global crude supply, with expectations that expanding pipeline capacity to 10 million barrels per day could take two to three years.
